In the name of Allah, the Compassionate and the Merciful
Fourteen Arabic alphabets form 14 'Solemn Verses' (Ayat-e-Muqatta'at) in the form of initials, of 29 chapters of Quran. الم (Alif-Laam-Meem) is one of them. As Quran is 'Mubeen'; meaning, its description is clear, manifest and open, therefore, the meanings of all the verses of Quran, including 'Solemn Verses' (Ayat-e-Muqatta'at) are definitely known to Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) and it is sure that these have been manifested to its principle addressee, Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم). It is also likely that Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) might have informed the meanings of these 'Solemn Verses' to some of his Sahabah and Awliya Allah.
We believe in whatever is meant by the 'Solemn Verses' (Ayat-e-Muqatta'at) by Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی).
However, we have also been commanded to read Quran carefully and attempt to understand the significance of every word/verse of Quran. When we think deeply, it comes to our mind that the 'Solemn Verses' (Ayat-e-Muqatta'at) are actually the 'Solemn Titles of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) awarded by Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) throughout Quran. My understanding is based on the fact that Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) has addressed Prophet Mohammad(صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) in Quran by specific names, like Muzzammil ( O'beloved who covers self in a coverlet) (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and Muddassir ( O'beloved, who covers self in a bed sheet) (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم). Therefore, the other names have been mentioned only by denoting certain Alphabets, the meaning of which have been kept hidden from general people. The meanings (and the full names / titles) are indeed known to Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) and His beloved Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).
2 - This is the book (scripture) in which there is no doubt; it is guidance to those who are abstinent (Muttaqeen).
What is abstinence (Taqwa)? There are degrees of Abstinence. The first is Sahih Iman by proclamation of Shahadah. This safeguards the person from eternal torment (in Hereafter). Then one must refrain from what is forbidden in Islam. Then avoid issues which are doubtful which may lead a person to committing sins. Then one must avoid spending his time in wasteful avocations and evil considerations (thoughts). Then one must try to spend his time in remembering Allah ( (سبحانہ و تعا لی) to an extent that the thought of Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) overtakes other irrelevant thoughts of the world. Then one must try to give due right to everyone around him, including his own self, as per the commandments of Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی). Then one must be alert in all his actions by seeing the presence of Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) around him. This is the elevated state of abstinence (Taqwa) referred to in the Hadith of Ihsan.
3 - Those who believe in the Unseen, establish prayers, and spend (righteously) from what We have given them.
There is a lot of confusion among scholars on the knowledge of Unseen of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).
There are categories of unseen. Allah (SWT) knows about Himself and knows everything about His creations. In this category, there is nothing 'Unseen' for Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) . Therefore, whenever we talk about 'Unseen', it will be with reference to creatures and not with reference to Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی). Read more .......
What is the difference between ' performing prayer' and 'establishing prayer'. Performance of prayer means doing a one time prayer or one days prayer or doing prayers occasionally; while establishment of prayer means, one performs 5 times prayers every day on regular basis, at regular timings, taking care of all requirements scrupulously. Performance of prayer with all the attention, like one is seeing Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) or with utmost attention knowing well that Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) is seeing him. This aspect has been referred in Hadith of Ihsan reported by Bukhari, Muslim and other Imams of Ahadith.
What is the meaning of spending from the things Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) has given. This covers Zakat. In addition, one should ensure that others are benefited from his knowledge, expertise, counseling, etc.
It is in Quran - وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ مَاذَا يُنفِقُونَ قُلِ الْعَفْوَ ۗ [(Meaning - They ask you O'Prophet - صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) "how much they are to spend (in Charity); Say: "What is beyond your needs."] (Al-Baqara - 219). This was the practice of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), most of his Sahabah and Awliya Allah.
4 - And those who believe in what is sent down upon you (O' Prophet - صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and that was sent down before you (on other prophets) and they firmly believe in Hereafter.
It is important for Muslims that they have absolute trust in Quran, which has been sent down on Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) as well as on other scriptures which were sent down on other Prophets (before Prophet Mohammad - صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).
7 - Their hearts and their ears are fastened by Allah's (سبحانہ و تعا لی ) seal (because of their rejection of faith) and their eyes are veiled (in view of their insistence on disbelief) and for them there is a severe torment.
10 - There is a severe disease in the hearts (of these hypocrites) And Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی ) increases their disease and for them is severe torment in view of their false assertions.
What was the disease in the hearts of the hypocrites? It was Jealously towards Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and His companions. When Islam established its foothold in Madina and nearby areas, many people, including the leaders of Jews and non believers declared themselves Muslims half heartedly and lost leadership in their community. This was the reason for their jealously towards Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم). They used to conspire against him and Sahabah secretly by joining hands with the enemies of Islam.
An important thing to be understood here is, if you sincerely love Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) and Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and are sincere in your Islamic deeds, guidance comes to you from Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی). If you are not sincere in Islam, this guidance gets stopped. Once this gets stopped, all types of ailments of hearts, like jealously, love of leadership and wealth starts increasing in your heart.
The Salafis and their like minded groups are glaring examples of this scenario. In order to seize leadership of Muslim community, they claim that following of important Imams of fiqh and Ahadith is Shirk. They changed Ahadith books of all important Imams, including books like Adab Al-Mufrad written by Bukhari. They regard the pious graves of Sahabah, Awliya as places of Apostasy. They destroyed all important traces of real Islam. They destroyed the house of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) in Makka where he lived, prayed and did zikr for 28 long years and converted it into a Public Toilet. They are perfect example of modern day hypocrites (Munafiqoon) of Islamic community.
13 - When it is said (to these hypocrites) to believe as (real) believers (d0), they say that, shall we believe as the fools (Muslims) believe? Yes, Indeed, they themselves are fools but they are unaware of it.
14 - When they meet the believers, they say that we are real believers and when they meet with leaders of disbelievers in seclusion, they say that indeed 'we are with you and we were just mocking the Muslims'.
15 - Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی ) will surly throw back at them their mockery (they will be severely punished) as they will increase in their rebellion (never ever to realize their folly to repent and get salvation).
17 - Their example is that of a person who kindled a fire and when it lighted the atmosphere around them, Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی ) took away the light and left them in darkness with which they cannot see anything.
The above verse depicts the condition of hypocrites. When they declare themselves Muslims, the light of Iman comes to their heart and they become capable of benefiting from it. However, when they look at apostates and meet with their leaders, they get afraid of their worldly might and prosperity and start supporting them. In this situation the Iman (Islamic faith) which had come to their hearts gets seized and they again start wandering in darkness of apostasy. They get subdued to all kinds of doubts about true Islam and they do not get the peace of mind and trust in Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی ) like truthful Muslims.
oصُمٌّ بُكْمٌ عُمْيٌ فَهُمْ لَا يَرْجِعُونَ
18 - They are deaf, dumb and blind and they cannot come back to the right path (of Islam).
19 - Or their (hypocrites') example is that of the rain which is coming from the skies which has darkness, thunder and lightening. They thrust their fingers into their ears for fear of death; Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی ) encircles disbelievers.
In the above verse, hypocrites' condition is explained by another example. They look at Muslims' successes but cannot understand the significance. They get scared of gradual consolidation of Islam and get afraid for their lives. Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) says, where will they go as He has encircled them from all direction.
An important issue to be understood in this verse is, hypocrites have also been addressed as disbelievers.
20 - It is very likely that the lightning takes away their vision (destroy them completely). Whenever there is lightening, they walk in this light and when they get darkness upon them, they hold back. If Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) willed, He would have deprived them of their hearing and sight. Indeed, Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) has power over everything.
The above verse explains that some verses of Quran are understood by these hypocrites and they accept them. However, when they cannot understand certain other verses, they create wrongful interpretations of these verses and deny the factual meanings of these verses. Alas, they did not make use of their hearing and vision properly which is a great gift of Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) to human beings. If Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) willed, he would have taken away their physical vision and hearing as well. But He is Merciful and Compassionate, does not take away his bounties even when they reject his clear signs.
Let us evaluate the condition of Salafis and their like minded groups in the light of the above verses. They cannot understand the following verses and deny their real meanings. They also wrongly interpret these verses to confirm their self concocted beliefs.
It is in Quran - " We (Allah - سبحانہ و تعا لی) shall show them Our Signs on the horizons and within themselves until it will be manifest to them that it is the Truth. (Fussilat - 53).
It is in Hadith - (Bukhari) Narrated by Abdullah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) - "Prophet Mohammad ( صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said 'Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) is not hidden from you."
It is in Hadith - Narrated by Jareer (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that he said, the Prophet ( صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said, soon you will see your Sustainer (Rab) openly. (Bukhari - Muslim - Mishkaath).
It is in Hadith - reported by Bukhari, Muslim and others. (It is a long Hadith. Translation of a part is given here). "Prophet( صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said that ‘you worship Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) seeing Him, and in case you fail to see Him, do your prayer knowing fully well that He is seeing you".
It is in Hadith - (Bukhari, Muslim and others) It is narrated by Jareer Bin Abdullah al-Bajali (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that he said: "We were with the Prophet ( صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and he said, 'You will certainly see your Lord as you see this moon, and there will be no trouble in seeing Him'.
It is in Quran - " (Say O'Prophet - صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) Praise be to Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی). He will show you His signs and you will recognize them. Your Lord is not heedless of anything you do. (An-Naml - 93).
It is in Quran - "The one who is blind (in spiritual vision) in this world, will be blind in Hereafter (Bani Israel - 72).
It is in Quran - Whichever side you turn, you will find Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی); Verily (in truth ) Allah – (سبحانہ و تعا لی) is Omnipresent (existing everywhere every moment) and Omniscient ( infinitely wise ). (Al-Baqra – 115 ).
It is in Quran - He is the First, and the Last, He is the Manifest (apparent) and the Immanent (actually present through out the material world) and is the knower of all things’. (Al-Hadeed – 3).
It is in Quran - 'Wherever you are, He is with you' (Al-Hadid - 4).
It is in Quran - 'He is in your own self, will you not see' (Az-Zariyat - 21).
It is in Quran - We (Allah - سبحانہ و تعا لی) are closer to you than your jugular vein’. (Qaf – 16).
It is in Quran - 'When My servants ask you (O'Prophet - صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) concerning Me, (tell them) I am ever present (with them) and I listen to the call of him that calls Me'. (Al-Baqara - 186).
Salafis, Deobandis and their like minded groups deny the actual meanings of the above Quranic verses and Ahadith and claim that Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) has a physical body and is sitting over the skies. He has limitation of movement and He is separated from his creatures.
They should know that what they preach is not Islam; it is clear cut idol worship.
They translate certain allegorical verses (Ayaat-e-Mutashaabihat) in Quran in their literal meanings to support their wrongful believes.
22 - It is Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) who spread the Earth for your living and skies as covering and sends down rain from the skies which produces fruits for you as your food. (After observing all these) do not concede peers for Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) as you are well aware of it.
23 - If you doubt (this Quran to be from Allah - سبحانہ و تعا لی) which has been sent down on Our Servant (Prophet Mohammad - صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) then bring a verse like it and call your helpers other Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) if you are right.
25 - (O'Prophet - صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم)) convey glad tidings to those who believe and who acted righteously that for them there are gardens (in Paradise) beneath which rivers flow. When they will be provided with the fruits (of Heaven) they will say that we were provided with this fruit earlier or something similar (in shape in our life time but the tastes of these fruits will be better and different) and for them are pure spouses and they will remain therein for ever.
26 - Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) does not hesitate from giving the example of gnat or of anything microscopic (which looks insignificant to people). Those who believe, know that the parable given by their Lord is the right one. But those who disbelieve say, what Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) means by this (insignificant) parable. Thus many get astray and many get guidance (from these parables). The ones who go astray are those who are wrong doers.
28 - How can you deny (the existence of) Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) (when you know that) you were lifeless and He gave you life; then He will cause you to die and you will be brought back to life again and you will return to Him.
30 - And when Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) addressed the angels (saying) I am going to make a Vicegerent on Earth; (The Angels) submitted will you make (a vicegerent) who will create disorder and cause bloodshed while we hymn your praise and sanctify You. He said, I know that which you do not know.
33 - Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) said O'Adam (علیھ السلا م )! tell them their names. And when Adam (علیھ السلا م ) told them their names, Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) said, did I not tell you that I know what is hidden in Heavens and Earth and what you show and conceal.
34 - And (remember Our beneficence) when We asked the Angels to "prostrate before Adam (علیھ السلا م ) (in Sajda-e-Tahiyya), they all prostrated except Iblis (Satan) and turned disobedient (disbeliever).
36 - Then Satan tempted them and caused them to err and became the cause of their ouster from Paradise. And We said get down you all to be the enemies of one another. For you, Earth will be dwelling place where you will find the provisions for living for a specific time.
