Hood | Sura # 11| 123 verses | Makka

In the name of Allah, the Compassionate and the Merciful

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 037

وَاصْنَعِ الْفُلْكَ بِأَعْيُنِنَا وَوَحْيِنَا وَلَا تُخَاطِبْنِي فِي الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا إِنَّهُمْ مُغْرَقُونَ   [ Build an ark under Our direction and as per Our instructions.  And do not plead for those who have been wicked, for they shall certainly be drowned. ]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 038

وَيَصْنَعُ الْفُلْكَ وَكُلَّمَا مَرَّ عَلَيْهِ مَلَأٌ مِنْ قَوْمِهِ سَخِرُوا مِنْهُ قَالَ إِنْ تَسْخَرُوا مِنَّا فَإِنَّا نَسْخَرُ مِنْكُمْ كَمَا تَسْخَرُونَ  [ So he built the ark; and when ring leaders among his people passed by him, they mocked at him. He said to them : 'Though you laugh at us (now), we shall laugh at you (later), as you are laughing at us.' ]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 039

فَسَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ مَنْ يَأْتِيهِ عَذَابٌ يُخْزِيهِ وَيَحِلُّ عَلَيْهِ عَذَابٌ مُقِيمٌ  [ So now you will come to know upon whom comes the punishment that disgraces him (in this world), and upon whom descends the permanent punishment (in Hereafter). ]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 040

حَتَّى إِذَا جَاءَ أَمْرُنَا وَفَارَ التَّنُّورُ قُلْنَا احْمِلْ فِيهَا مِنْ كُلٍّ زَوْجَيْنِ اثْنَيْنِ وَأَهْلَكَ إِلَّا مَنْ سَبَقَ عَلَيْهِ الْقَوْلُ وَمَنْ آَمَنَ وَمَا آَمَنَ مَعَهُ إِلَّا قَلِيلٌ  [ When Our command was issued and the waters gushed forth from the source, We said : 'Take into (the ark) a pair of every species, and members of your family other than those against whom the sentence has already been passed, and those who come to believe.' But only a few believed in him. ]

It looks from the above verse that when the command of Allah came, the water started gushing from a specific Oven (At-Tannur -  التَّنُّورُ) or may be from many springs from the earth followed by heavy rains. Thus, the entire planet earth was covered by water.
It is in Quran -  فَفَتَحْنَا أَبْوَابَ السَّمَاءِ بِمَاءٍ مُّنْهَمِرٍ  -   وَفَجَّرْنَا الْأَرْضَ عُيُونًا فَالْتَقَى الْمَاءُ عَلَىٰ أَمْرٍ قَدْ قُدِرَ [ Then We opened the gates of the heaven with rain pouring down.  And caused the earth to burst with springs, and the waters met for a matter already predestined. ] (Al-Qamar - 11-12).
The generations that came after Prophet Nooh (عليه السلام) were the descendants of the people rescued by Nooh (عليه السلام) in his Ark.
It is in Quran - ذُرِّيَّةَ مَنْ حَمَلْنَا مَعَ نُوحٍ [ O' descendants of those We carried (in the Ark) with Noah.]  (Al-Isra - 3)

It is in Quran -  أُولَـٰئِكَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِم مِّنَ النَّبِيِّينَ مِن ذُرِّيَّةِ آدَمَ وَمِمَّنْ حَمَلْنَا مَعَ نُوحٍ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّةِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَإِسْرَائِيلَ وَمِمَّنْ هَدَيْنَا وَاجْتَبَيْنَا ۚ إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتُ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ خَرُّوا سُجَّدًا وَبُكِيًّا [ Those were the ones upon whom Allah bestowed favor from among the prophets of the descendants of Adam and of those We carried [in the ship] with Noah, and of the descendants of Abraham and Israel, and of those whom We guided and chose. When the verses of the Most Merciful were recited to them, they fell in prostration and weeping. ] (Maryam - 58)

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 041

وَقَالَ ارْكَبُوا فِيهَا بِسْمِ اللَّهِ مَجْرَاهَا وَمُرْسَاهَا إِنَّ رَبِّي لَغَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ  [ And he said, (to everyone) 'board in (the ark). In the name of Allah is its movement and its stopping;  indeed my Lord is Oft Forgiving, Most Merciful.' ]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 042

وَهِيَ تَجْرِي بِهِمْ فِي مَوْجٍ كَالْجِبَالِ وَنَادَى نُوحٌ ابْنَهُ وَكَانَ فِي مَعْزِلٍ يَا بُنَيَّ ارْكَبْ مَعَنَا وَلَا تَكُنْ مَعَ الْكَافِرِينَ [ So the Ark floated with them amid waves like mountains, and Nooh (عليه السلام) cried out to a son of his who was standing apart, 'embark with us, my son, and do not be with the unbelievers!' ]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 043

قَالَ سَآَوِي إِلَى جَبَلٍ يَعْصِمُنِي مِنَ الْمَاءِ قَالَ لَا عَاصِمَ الْيَوْمَ مِنْ أَمْرِ اللَّهِ إِلَّا مَنْ رَحِمَ وَحَالَ بَيْنَهُمَا الْمَوْجُ فَكَانَ مِنَ الْمُغْرَقِينَ [ He said, 'I shall go up on a mountain and it will save me from the water'.  Nooh (عليه السلام) said, 'today there is none who can save from the punishment of Allah, except upon whom He has mercy.' And a wave came in between them, and he perished with the ones who drowned.]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 044

وَقِيلَ يَا أَرْضُ ابْلَعِي مَاءَكِ وَيَا سَمَاءُ أَقْلِعِي وَغِيضَ الْمَاءُ وَقُضِيَ الْأَمْرُ وَاسْتَوَتْ عَلَى الْجُودِيِّ وَقِيلَ بُعْدًا لِلْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ [ Then it was said : O earth, swallow back your water; and, O sky, desist (stop raining). And the water subsided, and the decree was accomplished.  The ark came to rest on Judi (Mount Ararat), and it was said : 'Away with the cursed people.']

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 045

وَنَادَى نُوحٌ رَبَّهُ فَقَالَ رَبِّ إِنَّ ابْنِي مِنْ أَهْلِي وَإِنَّ وَعْدَكَ الْحَقُّ وَأَنْتَ أَحْكَمُ الْحَاكِمِينَ [ And Nooh (عليه السلام) supplicated to his Lord and said, 'My Lord, indeed my son is also of my family, and surely Your promise is true and You are the Greatest Ruler of all.]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 046

قَالَ يَا نُوحُ إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ مِنْ أَهْلِكَ إِنَّهُ عَمَلٌ غَيْرُ صَالِحٍ فَلَا تَسْأَلْنِ مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِ عِلْمٌ إِنِّي أَعِظُكَ أَنْ تَكُونَ مِنَ الْجَاهِلِينَ [ He said, 'O Nooh (عليه السلام), he is not of your family; his deeds are most improper; therefore do not ask Me a thing of which you do not have knowledge; I advise you not to be unwise.]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 047

I seek refuge in You, lest I should ask of You what I have no knowledge of. And unless You forgive me and have mercy on me, I will indeed be among the losers.']

It is not just Prophet Nooh's (عليه السلام) son, his wife was also drowned along with others.

It is in Quran -  ضَرَبَ اللَّهُ مَثَلًا لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا امْرَأَتَ نُوحٍ وَامْرَأَتَ لُوطٍ ۖ كَانَتَا تَحْتَ عَبْدَيْنِ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا صَالِحَيْنِ فَخَانَتَاهُمَا فَلَمْ يُغْنِيَا عَنْهُمَا مِنَ اللَّهِ شَيْئًا وَقِيلَ ادْخُلَا النَّارَ مَعَ الدَّاخِلِينَ [ Allah presents an example of those who disbelieved.  The wife of Nooh and the wife of Loot (عليهم السلام). They were under two of Our righteous servants but betrayed them, so those prophets did not avail them from Allah, and it was said, 'Enter the Fire with those who enter.' ] (At-Tahreem - 10)

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 048

قِيلَ يَا نُوحُ اهْبِطْ بِسَلَامٍ مِنَّا وَبَرَكَاتٍ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى أُمَمٍ مِمَّنْ مَعَكَ وَأُمَمٌ سَنُمَتِّعُهُمْ ثُمَّ يَمَسُّهُمْ مِنَّا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ [ It was said, 'O Nooh (عليه السلام), disembark in safety from Us and blessings upon you and upon nations (descending) from those with you. For some other nations (of them) We will grant enjoyment (and if they get involved in wrongdoings) there will touch them from Us a painful punishment.]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 049

تِلْكَ مِنْ أَنْبَاءِ الْغَيْبِ نُوحِيهَا إِلَيْكَ مَا كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُهَا أَنْتَ وَلَا قَوْمُكَ مِنْ قَبْلِ هَذَا فَاصْبِرْ إِنَّ الْعَاقِبَةَ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ [ This is news of the Unknown We reveal to you, which neither you nor your people knew before. So (O Prophet ﷺ) endure with patience. The future is for those who keep away from evil and follow the straight path. ]

The accounts of earlier prophets have been provided in Quran at numerous places and every time these are meant to caution people that if they repeat the actions of the past people in denying the signs of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and getting involved in excessive evil, they will meet with the same fate as the earlier people.

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 050

[And to  (the people of) Aa'd (We sent) Hood (عليه السلام), their brother. He said, ‘O my people! Worship Allah. You have no other god besides Him. You have  fabricated (the idols you worship.]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 051

I do not ask you any reward for it. My reward lies only with Him who created me.   Don't  you exercise any reasoning? ]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 052

وَيَا قَوْمِ اسْتَغْفِرُوا رَبَّكُمْ ثُمَّ تُوبُوا إِلَيْهِ يُرْسِلِ السَّمَاءَ عَلَيْكُمْ مِدْرَارًا وَيَزِدْكُمْ قُوَّةً إِلَى قُوَّتِكُمْ وَلَا تَتَوَلَّوْا مُجْرِمِينَ [ O my people, beg your Lord to forgive you, and turn to Him in repentance. He will send down rain in abundance for you from the skies, and give you added strength. So don't turn away from Him as evil doers.' ]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 053

قَالُوا يَا هُودُ مَا جِئْتَنَا بِبَيِّنَةٍ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِتَارِكِي آَلِهَتِنَا عَنْ قَوْلِكَ وَمَا نَحْنُ لَكَ بِمُؤْمِنِينَ  [ They said, ‘O Hood (عليه السلام), you have not brought us any manifest proof (a miracle). We are not going to abandon our gods for what you say, and we are not going to believe you. ]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 054

'We only say that you have been severely struck by one of our deities'. Hood (عليه السلام) said, 'I make Allah a witness, and you all bear witness that I have no relation with whatever you ascribe (as partners to Allah)', ]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 055

Besides Him, therefore all of you plot against me and do not give me respite. ]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 056

إِنِّي تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ رَبِّي وَرَبِّكُمْ مَا مِنْ دَابَّةٍ إِلَّا هُوَ آَخِذٌ بِنَاصِيَتِهَا إِنَّ رَبِّي عَلَى صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَقِيمٍ [ I place my trust in Allah who is my Lord and your Lord. There is no creature that moves on earth who is not held by its forelock firmly by Him. Verily the way of my Lord is straight. ]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 057

فَإِنْ تَوَلَّوْا فَقَدْ أَبْلَغْتُكُمْ مَا أُرْسِلْتُ بِهِ إِلَيْكُمْ وَيَسْتَخْلِفُ رَبِّي قَوْمًا غَيْرَكُمْ وَلَا تَضُرُّونَهُ شَيْئًا إِنَّ رَبِّي عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ حَفِيظٌ [ 'If you turn away, then (remember) I have delivered to you the message I was sent with. (If you insist on disbelief) My Lord will put other people in your place, and you will not be able to prevail against Him.  Indeed my Lord keeps a watch over all things.' ]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 058

وَلَمَّا جَاءَ أَمْرُنَا نَجَّيْنَا هُودًا وَالَّذِينَ آَمَنُوا مَعَهُ بِرَحْمَةٍ مِنَّا وَنَجَّيْنَاهُمْ مِنْ عَذَابٍ غَلِيظٍ  [ So, when Our command was issued,  We rescued Hood (عليه السلام) by Our grace, and those who believed with him, and saved them from a dreadful doom. ]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 059

وَتِلْكَ عَادٌ جَحَدُوا بِآَيَاتِ رَبِّهِمْ وَعَصَوْا رُسُلَهُ وَاتَّبَعُوا أَمْرَ كُلِّ جَبَّارٍ عَنِيدٍ  [ These were the people of A'ad who denied the word of their Lord and rebelled against His Apostles, and followed the instructions of every perverse tyrant. ]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 060

[They were condemned in this life and will be condemned in the Hereafter. Look, (the tribes of) A'ad, the nation of Hood (عليه السلام) indeed defied their Lord. ]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 061

وَإِلَى ثَمُودَ أَخَاهُمْ صَالِحًا قَالَ يَا قَوْمِ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ مَا لَكُمْ مِنْ إِلَهٍ غَيْرُهُ هُوَ أَنْشَأَكُمْ مِنَ الْأَرْضِ وَاسْتَعْمَرَكُمْ فِيهَا فَاسْتَغْفِرُوهُ ثُمَّ تُوبُوا إِلَيْهِ إِنَّ رَبِّي قَرِيبٌ مُجِيبٌ  [ And to (the people of ) Thamud  (We sent)  Salih (عليه السلام), their brother. He said, ‘O my people! Worship Allah. You have no other god besides Him. He brought you forth from the earth and made it your habitation. So plead with Him for forgiveness, then turn to Him penitently. My Lord is indeed near and answers the calls.' ]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 062

[They said : 'O Salih,  we expected it from you before, that (you will not like our ways). But now you seek to prevent us from worshiping what our forefathers used to worship? Indeed we are in real doubt concerning what you call us to.' ]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 063

قَالَ يَا قَوْمِ أَرَأَيْتُمْ إِنْ كُنْتُ عَلَى بَيِّنَةٍ مِنْ رَبِّي وَآَتَانِي مِنْهُ رَحْمَةً فَمَنْ يَنْصُرُنِي مِنَ اللَّهِ إِنْ عَصَيْتُهُ فَمَا تَزِيدُونَنِي غَيْرَ تَخْسِيرٍ  [ He said : 'O my people, have you considered that if my Lord has clearly shown me the way, and I have His blessings too, then who will save me from Allah if I disobey Him? You will only add to my ruin. ]

After listening the above argument,  the people of Salhi (عليه السلام) demanded a miracle from him. They also demanded the specifics of the miracle.  They said a She camel should appear for them who should give birth to a baby and its milk should be sufficient for a large number of people.  Thus a she-camel miraculously appeared in front of them from a hill and gave birth to a baby.  She was very huge and its milk was sufficient for a large number of people.  Since they were fully aware that the she camel was a miracle, they allowed it to graze freely for a while as per the instructions of Salhi (عليه السلام).  However, they got used to it and started taking it easy and eventually killed it and thought that nothing will happen to them. They even challenged Prophet Salih (عليه السلام) to bring the promised punishment on them.

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 064

وَيَا قَوْمِ هَذِهِ نَاقَةُ اللَّهِ لَكُمْ آَيَةً فَذَرُوهَا تَأْكُلْ فِي أَرْضِ اللَّهِ وَلَا تَمَسُّوهَا بِسُوءٍ فَيَأْخُذَكُمْ عَذَابٌ قَرِيبٌ  [ And O my people, this is the she-camel of Allah,  for you a sign. Let her graze on Allah's earth and do not touch her with harm, or you will be taken by an impending punishment.]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 065

فَعَقَرُوهَا فَقَالَ تَمَتَّعُوا فِي دَارِكُمْ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ ذَلِكَ وَعْدٌ غَيْرُ مَكْذُوبٍ  [ But they hamstrung her, and then Salih (عليه السلام) said : Enjoy life in your homes for  three days! This is a threat that will not be belied.]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 066

فَلَمَّا جَاءَ أَمْرُنَا نَجَّيْنَا صَالِحًا وَالَّذِينَ آَمَنُوا مَعَهُ بِرَحْمَةٍ مِنَّا وَمِنْ خِزْيِ يَوْمِئِذٍ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ الْقَوِيُّ الْعَزِيزُ [ So, when Our command (of punishment) came We saved Salih (عليه السلام) by Our grace, and those who believed, with him, from the disgrace of that day.  Verily your Lord is Mighty and Powerful.]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 067

The Shriek seized those who were wrongdoers, and they lay lifeless, prostrate in their homes,]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 068

كَأَنْ لَمْ يَغْنَوْا فِيهَا أَلَا إِنَّ ثَمُودَ كَفَرُوا رَبَّهُمْ أَلَا بُعْدًا لِثَمُودَ [ As if they had never lived and flourished there. Look, the Thamud rejected their Lord, and look, they were removed completely from the sight. ]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 069

وَلَقَدْ جَاءَتْ رُسُلُنَا إِبْرَاهِيمَ بِالْبُشْرَى قَالُوا سَلَامًا قَالَ سَلَامٌ فَمَا لَبِثَ أَنْ جَاءَ بِعِجْلٍ حَنِيذٍ [ And Our messengers (angels) came to Ibrahim (عليه السلام) with good news. They said : Peace (be on you)! He answered : Peace (be on you). And he delayed not in bringing a roasted calf (for them to eat). ]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 070

فَلَمَّا رَأَى أَيْدِيَهُمْ لَا تَصِلُ إِلَيْهِ نَكِرَهُمْ وَأَوْجَسَ مِنْهُمْ خِيفَةً قَالُوا لَا تَخَفْ إِنَّا أُرْسِلْنَا إِلَى قَوْمِ لُوطٍ [ But when he saw their hands not reaching for it (they were not inclined to eat), it was strange and he felt apprehension from them. They said, 'Fear not. We have been sent to the people of Loot (عليه السلام).' ]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 071

وَامْرَأَتُهُ قَائِمَةٌ فَضَحِكَتْ فَبَشَّرْنَاهَا بِإِسْحَاقَ وَمِنْ وَرَاءِ إِسْحَاقَ يَعْقُوبَ [ And his wife was standing (by), so she laughed, then We gave her the good news of (a son) Ishaq and after Ishaq of (a grandson) Yaqoub (عليهم السلام). ]

Juz 12,  Hood, Verse 072

قَالَتْ يَا وَيْلَتَى أَأَلِدُ وَأَنَا عَجُوزٌ وَهَذَا بَعْلِي شَيْخًا إِنَّ هَذَا لَشَيْءٌ عَجِيبٌ [ She said, 'Woe to me! Shall I give birth while I am an old woman and this, my husband, is an old man? Indeed, this is an amazing thing!'. ]
