سورة النحل

THE BEE

An-Nahl | Sura # 16| 128 verses | Makkan

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

In the name of Allah, the Compassionate and the Merciful

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 067

وَمِنْ ثَمَرَاتِ النَّخِيلِ وَالْأَعْنَابِ تَتَّخِذُونَ مِنْهُ سَكَرًا وَرِزْقًا حَسَنًا إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لَآَيَةً لِقَوْمٍ يَعْقِلُونَ  [ Likewise in the fruits of the date-palm and the grapes, from which you derive intoxicants and wholesome food, certainly there is a sign for those who understand. ]

Wine and all intoxicants were prohibited later in three stages.

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 068

وَأَوْحَىٰ رَبُّكَ إِلَى النَّحْلِ أَنِ اتَّخِذِي مِنَ الْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًا وَمِنَ الشَّجَرِ وَمِمَّا يَعْرِشُونَ   [ And your Lord inspired the bee (saying) : 'Make your hives in the mountains, in the trees, and in anything which men may build for beekeeping.  ]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 069

ثُمَّ كُلِي مِنْ كُلِّ الثَّمَرَاتِ فَاسْلُكِي سُبُلَ رَبِّكِ ذُلُلًا يَخْرُجُ مِنْ بُطُونِهَا شَرَابٌ مُخْتَلِفٌ أَلْوَانُهُ فِيهِ شِفَاءٌ لِلنَّاسِ إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لَآَيَةً لِقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ   [ Then eat from every (kind of) fruit and follow meekly the ways of your Lord.'  There issues from its belly a juice of diverse shades in which there is a cure for the people. There is indeed a sign in that for the people who reflect.   ]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 070

وَاللَّهُ خَلَقَكُمْ ثُمَّ يَتَوَفَّاكُمْ وَمِنْكُمْ مَنْ يُرَدُّ إِلَى أَرْذَلِ الْعُمُرِ لِكَيْ لَا يَعْلَمَ بَعْدَ عِلْمٍ شَيْئًا إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ قَدِيرٌ   [ It is Allah who creates you, then makes you die; and some reach to the old age when they forget what they had known before. Indeed, Allah is All Knowing, All Powerful.]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 071

وَاللَّهُ فَضَّلَ بَعْضَكُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ فِي الرِّزْقِ فَمَا الَّذِينَ فُضِّلُوا بِرَادِّي رِزْقِهِمْ عَلَى مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُهُمْ فَهُمْ فِيهِ سَوَاءٌ أَفَبِنِعْمَةِ اللَّهِ يَجْحَدُونَ   [ Allah has favored some of you over others in the means of subsistence.  But those who were favored would not hand over their provision to those whom their right hands possess (slaves/servants/subordinates) so they would be equal to them therein. Then is it the favor of Allah they reject?]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 072

وَاللَّهُ جَعَلَ لَكُمْ مِنْ أَنْفُسِكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا وَجَعَلَ لَكُمْ مِنْ أَزْوَاجِكُمْ بَنِينَ وَحَفَدَةً وَرَزَقَكُمْ مِنَ الطَّيِّبَاتِ أَفَبِالْبَاطِلِ يُؤْمِنُونَ وَبِنِعْمَةِ اللَّهِ هُمْ يَكْفُرُونَ   [ And Allah has made for you mates (and companions) of your own nature, and made for you, out of them, sons and daughters and grandchildren, and provided for you sustenance of the best. (In spite of that) In falsehood they believe and in the favors of Allah they disbelieve. ]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 073

وَيَعْبُدُونَ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ مَا لَا يَمْلِكُ لَهُمْ رِزْقًا مِنَ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ شَيْئًا وَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ   [ They worship those deities other than Allah, who neither provide them anything for sustenance from the skies or the earth, nor do they have any power to do so? ]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 074

فَلَا تَضْرِبُوا لِلَّهِ الْأَمْثَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَعْلَمُ وَأَنْتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ  [  So do not set up equals to Allah, for Allah certainly knows and you do not know.]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 075

ضَرَبَ اللَّهُ مَثَلًا عَبْدًا مَمْلُوكًا لَا يَقْدِرُ عَلَى شَيْءٍ وَمَنْ رَزَقْنَاهُ مِنَّا رِزْقًا حَسَنًا فَهُوَ يُنْفِقُ مِنْهُ سِرًّا وَجَهْرًا هَلْ يَسْتَوُونَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ بَلْ أَكْثَرُهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ  [ Allah presents the example of a man who is a hired servant with no power over anything, and another on whom We have bestowed a handsome fortune, who spends from it in private and in public.  Can they be equal? Praise be Allah! But most men do not understand.]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 076

وَضَرَبَ اللَّهُ مَثَلًا رَجُلَيْنِ أَحَدُهُمَا أَبْكَمُ لَا يَقْدِرُ عَلَى شَيْءٍ وَهُوَ كَلٌّ عَلَى مَوْلَاهُ أَيْنَمَا يُوَجِّهْهُ لَا يَأْتِ بِخَيْرٍ هَلْ يَسْتَوِي هُوَ وَمَنْ يَأْمُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَهُوَ عَلَى صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَقِيمٍ  [ And Allah sets forth another parable of two men : one of them is dumb, incapable of anything. He is a burden on his master. Wherever he is sent, he brings no good. Can such a person be equal to the one who commands justice and is on the Straight Path?]

With the simple understandable parables, Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is explaining that the false deities and idols, who they consider as their Gods, are useless, they cannot do anything as they are imaginary entities created by the people who are their worshipers.  It is Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) who created the human beings and provides them with sustenance and takes care of their welfare.  He is the real God who should be worshiped.

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 077

وَلِلَّهِ غَيْبُ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا أَمْرُ السَّاعَةِ إِلَّا كَلَمْحِ الْبَصَرِ أَوْ هُوَ أَقْرَبُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ  [ To Allah belongs the Unseen of the heavens and the earth. The matter (command) of the Hour is like the twinkling of an eye, or (even) swifter.   Indeed Allah has power over all things. ]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 078

وَاللَّهُ أَخْرَجَكُمْ مِنْ بُطُونِ أُمَّهَاتِكُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ شَيْئًا وَجَعَلَ لَكُمُ السَّمْعَ وَالْأَبْصَارَ وَالْأَفْئِدَةَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ  [ It is He Who brought you forth from the wombs of your mothers when you knew nothing; and He gave you hearing and sight and intelligence and affections, so perhaps you would be grateful. ]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 079

أَلَمْ يَرَوْا إِلَى الطَّيْرِ مُسَخَّرَاتٍ فِي جَوِّ السَّمَاءِ مَا يُمْسِكُهُنَّ إِلَّا اللَّهُ إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لَآَيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يُؤْمِنُونَ  [ Don't they look at the birds, held poised in (the air and) sky? Nothing holds them up but (the power of) Allah. Verily in this are signs for those who believe. ]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 080

وَاللَّهُ جَعَلَ لَكُمْ مِنْ بُيُوتِكُمْ سَكَنًا وَجَعَلَ لَكُمْ مِنْ جُلُودِ الْأَنْعَامِ بُيُوتًا تَسْتَخِفُّونَهَا يَوْمَ ظَعْنِكُمْ وَيَوْمَ إِقَامَتِكُمْ وَمِنْ أَصْوَافِهَا وَأَوْبَارِهَا وَأَشْعَارِهَا أَثَاثًا وَمَتَاعًا إِلَى حِينٍ  [ Allah has given you homes to live in, and tents (made) from the hides of cattle convenient for the days of traveling and halting; and from their wool and fur and hair you make domestic articles and goods that last a certain time.]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 081

وَاللَّهُ جَعَلَ لَكُمْ مِمَّا خَلَقَ ظِلَالًا وَجَعَلَ لَكُمْ مِنَ الْجِبَالِ أَكْنَانًا وَجَعَلَ لَكُمْ سَرَابِيلَ تَقِيكُمُ الْحَرَّ وَسَرَابِيلَ تَقِيكُمْ بَأْسَكُمْ كَذَلِكَ يُتِمُّ نِعْمَتَهُ عَلَيْكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُسْلِمُونَ  [ And Allah has provided you shade out of what He created, and has given you shelter in the mountains.  He has also provided you with clothes protecting you from the heat (and cold), and armor shielding you in the  battle. This is how He perfects His favor upon you, so perhaps you will  submit (to Him).]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 082

فَإِنْ تَوَلَّوْا فَإِنَّمَا عَلَيْكَ الْبَلَاغُ الْمُبِينُ  [ But if they turn their backs (O' Prophet ﷺ), your responsibility is only to communicate in clear terms. ]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 083

يَعْرِفُونَ نِعْمَةَ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ يُنْكِرُونَهَا وَأَكْثَرُهُمُ الْكَافِرُونَ  [ They recognize the blessing of Allah and then deny it, and most of them are disbelievers. ]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 084

وَيَوْمَ نَبْعَثُ مِنْ كُلِّ أُمَّةٍ شَهِيدًا ثُمَّ لَا يُؤْذَنُ لِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَلَا هُمْ يُسْتَعْتَبُونَ [ The day We shall call a witness from every people, the disbelievers will not be allowed to make excuses. ]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 085

وَإِذَا رَأَى الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا الْعَذَابَ فَلَا يُخَفَّفُ عَنْهُمْ وَلَا هُمْ يُنْظَرُونَ [ And when the wrongdoers see the punishment, it shall not be lightened for them, nor will they be granted any respite. ]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 086

وَإِذَا رَأَى الَّذِينَ أَشْرَكُوا شُرَكَاءَهُمْ قَالُوا رَبَّنَا هَؤُلَاءِ شُرَكَاؤُنَا الَّذِينَ كُنَّا نَدْعُوا مِنْ دُونِكَ فَأَلْقَوْا إِلَيْهِمُ الْقَوْلَ إِنَّكُمْ لَكَاذِبُونَ [ When the polytheists see their partners, they will say, ‘Our Lord! These are our partners whom we used to invoke besides You.’ But they will retort to them (saying), ‘You are indeed liars!’ ]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 087

وَأَلْقَوْا إِلَى اللَّهِ يَوْمَئِذٍ السَّلَمَ وَضَلَّ عَنْهُمْ مَا كَانُوا يَفْتَرُونَ [ They shall bow down in their submission to Allah that Day and the gods of their own inventions will leave them in the lurch. ]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 088

الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَصَدُّوا عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ زِدْنَاهُمْ عَذَابًا فَوْقَ الْعَذَابِ بِمَا كَانُوا يُفْسِدُونَ [ For those who disbelieve and hinder (others) from the Way of Allah, We will add more punishment to their punishment for all the corruption they spread. ]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 089

وَيَوْمَ نَبْعَثُ فِي كُلِّ أُمَّةٍ شَهِيدًا عَلَيْهِمْ مِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ وَجِئْنَا بِكَ شَهِيدًا عَلَى هَؤُلَاءِ وَنَزَّلْنَا عَلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ تِبْيَانًا لِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةً وَبُشْرَى لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ  [ Remind them of the Day when We shall call from every people a witness against them, and make you (O' Prophet  ﷺ) a witness over them, for We have revealed to you the Book as an exposition of everything, and as guidance and grace and happy tidings for those who submit. ]

Who will be witnesses of every nation?  Naturally, the witness will be their Prophet who will testify about their nations.  And who will be the witness over all of them?  The above verse clarifies that it will be Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).

(i) It is in Quran –   يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ شَاهِدًا وَمُبَشِّرًا وَنَذِيرًا - وَدَاعِيًا إِلَى اللَّهِ بِإِذْنِهِ وَسِرَاجًا مُّنِيرًا [ O’ Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم)! Truly,  We have sent you as a Witness, a Bearer of Glad Tidings and Warner (for the entire Cosmos); and as one who invites to Allah's - عَزَّ وَجَلَّ (Grace) by His consent, and as a lamp spreading light (into the whole cosmos).] (Al - Ahzab 45-46).

The above verse describes Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) as 'Lamp spreading light (into the whole cosmos).  He is also referred as a Witness, a bearer of glad tidings and warner to humanity.  A witness is the one who sees and knows about all the physical and spiritual aspects of this cosmos.  Witness of a person who has just heard about a thing is not accepted.
Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) took the covenant (promise) of (all) the prophets, saying : 'I give you a Book and Wisdom; then comes to you an Apostle (Mohammad ﷺ) , confirming what is with you; do you believe in him and render him help.' Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) said : "Do you agree, and take this my Covenant as binding on you?" They said : 'We agree.' He said: 'Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses.] (Aal-e-Imran – 81).

(iii) It is in Hadith - It is narrated on the authority of   Abu Hurayrah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that when Allah's  Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) was asked since how long he is the Prophet, he replied, ‘When Adam (علیھ السلا م ) had not yet had his spirit joined to his body (Tirmidhi).

(iv) It is in Hadith  -  Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said  'Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) gives and I distribute'. (Bukhari and Muslim)

The above Hadith establishes the pivotal and central role of Prophet Mohammad  (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم)The process of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) giving and Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) distributing is continuous, from the time this Cosmos came into existence.   Followers of deviant sects wrongly limit this Hadith to the physical life of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).

(v) It is in Quran – وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ إِلَّا رَحْمَةً لِّلْعَالَمِينَ  [ (O’ Prophet  ﷺ)  'We have not sent you except for the Mercy upon all the worlds. ] (Al-Anbiya – 107).

(vi) It is in Hadith - It is related that Jābir Ibn  Abdullah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said to Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم),  "O Apostle of Allāh (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) may my father and mother be sacrificed for you, tell me the first thing Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ)  created before all things."  The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said:   O' Jabir (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ), the first thing Allah  ( عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ) created was the light of your Prophet (  صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) from His light. (And everything else was created from that light).  (Part of the Hadith).

The above Hadith was narrated by Abdur Razzaq (d. 211 AH) in his Musannaf according to Qastallani in al-Mawahib al-Laduniyya (1:55) and Zarqani in his Sharh al-Mawahib (1:56 of the Matba`a al-amira edition, Cairo).

There cannot be any doubt as to the reliability of Abdur  Razzaq as a narrator.  Bukhari took 120 narrations from him while  Muslim took 400.

Biahaqi also narrated the above Hadith with a different wording in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwa, according to Zurqani in his Sharh al-Mawahib (1:56 of the Matba'a al-amira, Cairo).  Also Diyarbakri narrated it in 'Tarikh al-Khamis (1-20).

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 090

إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَالْإِحْسَانِ وَإِيتَاءِ ذِي الْقُرْبَى وَيَنْهَى عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنْكَرِ وَالْبَغْيِ يَعِظُكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ  [ Indeed Allah enjoins justice and kindness and generosity towards relatives, and He forbids indecency, wrong, and aggression. He advises you, so that you may take admonition. ]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 091

وَأَوْفُوا بِعَهْدِ اللَّهِ إِذَا عَاهَدْتُمْ وَلَا تَنْقُضُوا الْأَيْمَانَ بَعْدَ تَوْكِيدِهَا وَقَدْ جَعَلْتُمُ اللَّهَ عَلَيْكُمْ كَفِيلًا إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَعْلَمُ مَا تَفْعَلُونَ  [ Fulfill Allah’s covenant when you pledge, and do not break (your) oaths after pledging them solemnly and having made Allah a witness over yourselves.  Indeed Allah knows what you do. ]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 092

وَلَا تَكُونُوا كَالَّتِي نَقَضَتْ غَزْلَهَا مِنْ بَعْدِ قُوَّةٍ أَنْكَاثًا تَتَّخِذُونَ أَيْمَانَكُمْ دَخَلًا بَيْنَكُمْ أَنْ تَكُونَ أُمَّةٌ هِيَ أَرْبَى مِنْ أُمَّةٍ إِنَّمَا يَبْلُوكُمُ اللَّهُ بِهِ وَلَيُبَيِّنَنَّ لَكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ مَا كُنْتُمْ فِيهِ تَخْتَلِفُونَ  [ And do not be like her who untwists her yarn having spun it into durable thread. Do not use your oaths deceitfully because one party has dominance over you.   Allah surely tries you in this way.  He will make it clear to you on the Day of Resurrection what you were differing about.]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 093

وَلَوْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَجَعَلَكُمْ أُمَّةً وَاحِدَةً وَلَكِنْ يُضِلُّ مَنْ يَشَاءُ وَيَهْدِي مَنْ يَشَاءُ وَلَتُسْأَلُنَّ عَمَّا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ  [ And if  Allah had wished, He would have made you one community, but He leads astray whomever He wishes and guides whomever He wishes, and you will surely be questioned concerning what you used to do. ]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 094

وَلَا تَتَّخِذُوا أَيْمَانَكُمْ دَخَلًا بَيْنَكُمْ فَتَزِلَّ قَدَمٌ بَعْدَ ثُبُوتِهَا وَتَذُوقُوا السُّوءَ بِمَا صَدَدْتُمْ عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَلَكُمْ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ  [ And do not take your oaths as a means of deceiving one another or your feet will slip after they have been firm. Then you will taste the evil (consequences) of hindering (others) from the Way of Allah, and you will suffer a tremendous punishment. ]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 095

وَلَا تَشْتَرُوا بِعَهْدِ اللَّهِ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا إِنَّمَا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ هُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ  [ Do not sell Allah’s covenant for a paltry gain. Indeed what is with Allah is better for you, should you know. ]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 096

مَا عِنْدَكُمْ يَنْفَدُ وَمَا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ بَاقٍ وَلَنَجْزِيَنَّ الَّذِينَ صَبَرُوا أَجْرَهُمْ بِأَحْسَنِ مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ [ That which is with you will be spent but what is with Allah shall last, and We will surely pay the (people who are) patient, their reward, in proportion to the best of what they used to do. ]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 097

مَنْ عَمِلَ صَالِحًا مِنْ ذَكَرٍ أَوْ أُنْثَى وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ فَلَنُحْيِيَنَّهُ حَيَاةً طَيِّبَةً وَلَنَجْزِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْرَهُمْ بِأَحْسَنِ مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ [ Whoever does righteous deeds, whether male or female, provided he is a believer, We will surely cause them to live a good life, and reward them in accordance with the best of what they have done. ]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 098

فَإِذَا قَرَأْتَ الْقُرْآَنَ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ [ When you recite the Quran, seek the protection of Allah against the reprobate Satan. ]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 099

إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ لَهُ سُلْطَانٌ عَلَى الَّذِينَ آَمَنُوا وَعَلَى رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُونَ [ Indeed he does not have any authority over those who have faith and put their trust in their Lord. ]

Juz 14,  An-Nahl, Verse 100

إِنَّمَا سُلْطَانُهُ عَلَى الَّذِينَ يَتَوَلَّوْنَهُ وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ بِهِ مُشْرِكُونَ [ His authority is only over those who befriend him and those who associate others with Allah. ]
