AL-HAJJ

Al-Hajj | Sura # 22| 78 verses | Madinan

In the name of Allah, the Compassionate and the Merciful

Juz 17, Al-Hajj, Verse 027

وَأَذِّنْ فِي النَّاسِ بِالْحَجِّ يَأْتُوكَ رِجَالًا وَعَلَى كُلِّ ضَامِرٍ يَأْتِينَ مِنْ كُلِّ فَجٍّ عَمِيقٍ [ Call all the people for Hajj.  Let them arrive on foot or mounted on lean camels. They will respond and arrive from all directions. ]

It is in Hadith - It is narrated on the authority of Ibn Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that when Ibrahim (عليه السلام) was commanded to call all the people for Hajj, he said : 'O Lord, how can I convey this to people when my voice will not reach them' It was said : 'Call them and We will convey it.' So Ibrahim (عليه السلام) stood up and said, 'O mankind! Your Lord has established a House so come on pilgrimage to it.'  It is said that the mountains lowered themselves so that his voice would reach all the regions of the earth, and those who were still in their mothers' wombs and their fathers' loins would hear the call. The response came from everyone in the cities, deserts and countryside, and those whom Allah has decreed will make the pilgrimage, until the Day of Resurrection : 'At Your service, O Allah, at Your service.' (Ibn Jarir, Ibn Abi Hatim)

Juz 17, Al-Hajj, Verse 028

لِيَشْهَدُوا مَنَافِعَ لَهُمْ وَيَذْكُرُوا اسْمَ اللَّهِ فِي أَيَّامٍ مَعْلُومَاتٍ عَلَى مَا رَزَقَهُمْ مِنْ بَهِيمَةِ الْأَنْعَامِ فَكُلُوا مِنْهَا وَأَطْعِمُوا الْبَائِسَ الْفَقِيرَ [ So that they may witness all (the spiritual, social, and economic) benefits in store for them, and offer during the known, appointed days the sacrificial cattle that He has provided for them by pronouncing Allah's Name over them. Eat of their meat and feed the distressed, the poor. ]

Juz 17, Al-Hajj, Verse 029

ثُمَّ لْيَقْضُوا تَفَثَهُمْ وَلْيُوفُوا نُذُورَهُمْ وَلْيَطَّوَّفُوا بِالْبَيْتِ الْعَتِيقِ [ So let the pilgrims perform their acts of purification and fulfill their vows. And then circumambulate around the Honorable House (Ka'ba). ]

Juz 17, Al-Hajj, Verse 030

As for anyone who honors the sacred ordinances of Allah, it is good for him in the sight of his Lord.  Livestock have been permitted to you, except what has been explicitly forbidden. So turn away from the filth of idols, and turn away from telling lies. ]

Juz 17, Al-Hajj, Verse 031

حُنَفَاءَ لِلَّهِ غَيْرَ مُشْرِكِينَ بِهِ وَمَنْ يُشْرِكْ بِاللَّهِ فَكَأَنَّمَا خَرَّ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ فَتَخْطَفُهُ الطَّيْرُ أَوْ تَهْوِي بِهِ الرِّيحُ فِي مَكَانٍ سَحِيقٍ [ Dedicate yourselves to Allah and do not commit shirk with Him,   for anyone who commits shirk, it is as though he had fallen from the sky; then his body is either snatched away by birds or carried away by the wind to some far-off place, ]

Juz 17, Al-Hajj, Verse 032

ذَلِكَ وَمَنْ يُعَظِّمْ شَعَائِرَ اللَّهِ فَإِنَّهَا مِنْ تَقْوَى الْقُلُوبِ [ That ( is you have already listened and became aware of His command).  And anyone who honors the symbols set up by Allah it shows that he is  righteous at heart. ]

Juz 17, Al-Hajj, Verse 033

لَكُمْ فِيهَا مَنَافِعُ إِلَى أَجَلٍ مُسَمًّى ثُمَّ مَحِلُّهَا إِلَى الْبَيْتِ الْعَتِيقِ [ There are advantages for you in these (cattle) up to a time, then their place is (near) the old Honorable House for sacrifice.]

Juz 17, Al-Hajj, Verse 034

وَلِكُلِّ أُمَّةٍ جَعَلْنَا مَنْسَكًا لِيَذْكُرُوا اسْمَ اللَّهِ عَلَى مَا رَزَقَهُمْ مِنْ بَهِيمَةِ الْأَنْعَامِ فَإِلَهُكُمْ إِلَهٌ وَاحِدٌ فَلَهُ أَسْلِمُوا وَبَشِّرِ الْمُخْبِتِينَ [ For every community We have ordained certain rites that they may commemorate the name of Allah by reciting it over the cattle We have given them for sacrifice. Your God is one God, so be obedient to Him. Give good tidings to those who bow in obedience to Allah,]

Juz 17, Al-Hajj, Verse 035

الَّذِينَ إِذَا ذُكِرَ اللَّهُ وَجِلَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَالصَّابِرِينَ عَلَى مَا أَصَابَهُمْ وَالْمُقِيمِي الصَّلَاةِ وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَاهُمْ يُنْفِقُونَ [ (The people who are obedient to Allah are those) Whose hearts are filled with awe when the name of Allah is mentioned before them, who endure with fortitude what befalls them, and those who establish Salah and those who spend from what We have provided them. ]

Juz 17, Al-Hajj, Verse 036

وَالْبُدْنَ جَعَلْنَاهَا لَكُمْ مِنْ شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ لَكُمْ فِيهَا خَيْرٌ فَاذْكُرُوا اسْمَ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهَا صَوَافَّ فَإِذَا وَجَبَتْ جُنُوبُهَا فَكُلُوا مِنْهَا وَأَطْعِمُوا الْقَانِعَ وَالْمُعْتَرَّ كَذَلِكَ سَخَّرْنَاهَا لَكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ [ We have made sacrificial camels (and cattle) among the symbols of Allah, in which there is  good for you. So pronounce the Name of Allah over them when they are lined up (for sacrifice). Once they have fallen (lifeless) on their sides, you may eat from their meat, and feed the need, those who do not beg, and those who do. In this way We have subjected these (animals) to you so that you may be grateful. ]

Juz 17, Al-Hajj, Verse 037

لَنْ يَنَالَ اللَّهَ لُحُومُهَا وَلَا دِمَاؤُهَا وَلَكِنْ يَنَالُهُ التَّقْوَى مِنْكُمْ كَذَلِكَ سَخَّرَهَا لَكُمْ لِتُكَبِّرُوا اللَّهَ عَلَى مَا هَدَاكُمْ وَبَشِّرِ الْمُحْسِنِينَ [ It is not their meat nor their blood, that reaches Allah.  It is your piety that reaches Him. He has thus made them subject to you, that you may glorify Allah for His Guidance to you. And proclaim the good news to all who do right. ]

Juz 17, Al-Hajj, Verse 038

Truly, Allah defends those who believe. Surely, Allah does not like any treacherous, ungrateful. ]

Juz 17, Al-Hajj, Verse 039

أُذِنَ لِلَّذِينَ يُقَاتَلُونَ بِأَنَّهُمْ ظُلِمُوا وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَى نَصْرِهِمْ لَقَدِيرٌ [ Permission (to fight) has been given to those against whom war is being waged wrongfully, because they were wronged. And Allah is surely capable of giving them victory. ]

The above verse clarifies that Muslims are permitted to fight defensive wars.  War is waged against the oppressors to establish peace in the land.

History of early Islam is witness that Muslims did not fight with anyone who wanted to live in peace with them. They took up arms only against those tyrants who were existential threat to Muslims and those who were the sworn enemies.  Thus, the wars were essentially defensive in nature and the aim was to establish order and peace in the world.  If Muslims had done what Christians/Jews did in Spain and other places, entire continents of Asia, Africa and half of Europe would have 100% Muslim population today.

Juz 17, Al-Hajj, Verse 040

الَّذِينَ أُخْرِجُوا مِنْ دِيَارِهِمْ بِغَيْرِ حَقٍّ إِلَّا أَنْ يَقُولُوا رَبُّنَا اللَّهُ وَلَوْلَا دَفْعُ اللَّهِ النَّاسَ بَعْضَهُمْ بِبَعْضٍ لَهُدِّمَتْ صَوَامِعُ وَبِيَعٌ وَصَلَوَاتٌ وَمَسَاجِدُ يُذْكَرُ فِيهَا اسْمُ اللَّهِ كَثِيرًا وَلَيَنْصُرَنَّ اللَّهُ مَنْ يَنْصُرُهُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَقَوِيٌّ عَزِيزٌ [ (They are) those who have been driven from their homes unjustly, for saying only that 'Our Lord is Allah.' And, if Allah did not intervene by using some people to drive out others, many monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, where Allah's name is much remembered, would have been destroyed. Allah is sure to help those who help His cause, for truly Allah is strong and mighty. ]

The above verse is not meant to be interpreted that the present monasteries, churches and synagogues and even mosques run by some deviant sects,  all come under the category of praying places of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ).  Whatever meeting place or place of worship in which it is propagated that Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) has sons or Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) has a physical body and sitting over the Arsh or where idols of Prophets and past dignitaries are worshiped, or where disrespect and blasphemy of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) is propagated openly, is not a place of worship  where Allah's (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is remembered.  These are the places where faithlessness is taught to people.

By saying so, we do not mean to hate or discriminate people on the basis of their faith.  Faith is a choice, and everyone is free to chose the faith of his choice and we are required to keep cordial relations with the people of all faiths. There is no second opinion in this context.

Our argument is based on Sahih Iman which has been taught to us by Prophet Mohammad If someone is not following the truthful teachings of Islam as taught by Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), he may not be treated as a believer in Hereafter.  The whole Quran and Prophet's  Sunnah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) attest to this fact.
It is in Quran  -  وَالَّذِينَ اتَّخَذُوا مَسْجِدًا ضِرَارًا وَكُفْرًا وَتَفْرِيقًا بَيْنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَإِرْصَادًا لِّمَنْ حَارَبَ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ مِن قَبْلُ ۚ وَلَيَحْلِفُنَّ إِنْ أَرَدْنَا إِلَّا الْحُسْنَىٰ ۖ وَاللَّهُ يَشْهَدُ إِنَّهُمْ لَكَاذِبُونَ  -  لَا تَقُمْ فِيهِ أَبَدًا ۚ لَّمَسْجِدٌ أُسِّسَ عَلَى التَّقْوَىٰ مِنْ أَوَّلِ يَوْمٍ أَحَقُّ أَن تَقُومَ فِيهِ ۚ فِيهِ رِجَالٌ يُحِبُّونَ أَن يَتَطَهَّرُوا ۚ وَاللَّهُ يُحِبُّ الْمُطَّهِّرِينَ  [ And (there are) those (hypocrites) who took for themselves a mosque for causing harm and disbelief and division among the believers and as a station for whoever had warred against Allah and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) before. And they will surely swear, 'We intended only the best.' And Allah testifies that indeed they are liars. Do not stand (for prayer) within it, ever.

A mosque founded on righteousness (Masjid-e-Nabawi) from the first day is more worthy for you to stand in. Within it are men who love to purify themselves; and Allah loves those who purify themselves. (At-Tawba - 107-08)

Juz 17, Al-Hajj, Verse 041

الَّذِينَ إِنْ مَكَّنَّاهُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ أَقَامُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآَتَوُا الزَّكَاةَ وَأَمَرُوا بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَنَهَوْا عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ وَلِلَّهِ عَاقِبَةُ الْأُمُورِ [ They are the believers who, if We give them authority on earth,  (they will) establish Salah and pay Zakat  and enjoin and promote what is right and good and forbid and try to prevent the evil. With Allah rests the outcome for all matters. ]

Juz 17, Al-Hajj, Verse 042

وَإِنْ يُكَذِّبُوكَ فَقَدْ كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ وَعَادٌ وَثَمُودُ [ If they deny you (O' Prophet  ﷺ), so did the people of Nooh (عليه السلام) before them, as well as (the tribes of) Aad and Thamud, ]

Juz 17, Al-Hajj, Verse 043

وَقَوْمُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَقَوْمُ لُوطٍ [ And those of Ibrahim and Lut (عليهم السلام). ]

Juz 17, Al-Hajj, Verse 044

وَأَصْحَابُ مَدْيَنَ وَكُذِّبَ مُوسَى فَأَمْلَيْتُ لِلْكَافِرِينَ ثُمَّ أَخَذْتُهُمْ فَكَيْفَ كَانَ نَكِيرِ [ As well as the residents of Madyan had denied their Prophets, likewise Musa (عليه السلام) was also denied. Initially, I gave respite to all those unbelievers and then I seized them.  See how terrible was My censure! ]

Juz 17, Al-Hajj, Verse 045

فَكَأَيِّنْ مِنْ قَرْيَةٍ أَهْلَكْنَاهَا وَهِيَ ظَالِمَةٌ فَهِيَ خَاوِيَةٌ عَلَى عُرُوشِهَا وَبِئْرٍ مُعَطَّلَةٍ وَقَصْرٍ مَشِيدٍ  [ And many townships We have destroyed while they were involved in wrongdoing. (Even today you can see) their ruins fallen with their roofs, many deserted wells, and lofty (deserted) castles! ]

Juz 17, Al-Hajj, Verse 046

Have they no hearts to learn wisdom, or ears to hear the Truth? Certainly it is not their eyes which are blind, but it is the hearts in their breasts which are blind. ]

Juz 17, Al-Hajj, Verse 047

وَيَسْتَعْجِلُونَكَ بِالْعَذَابِ وَلَنْ يُخْلِفَ اللَّهُ وَعْدَهُ وَإِنَّ يَوْمًا عِنْدَ رَبِّكَ كَأَلْفِ سَنَةٍ مِمَّا تَعُدُّونَ  [ Yet they ask thee to hasten on the Punishment! But Allah will not fail in His Promise. Verily a Day in the sight of your Lord is like a thousand years of your counting. ]

Juz 17, Al-Hajj, Verse 048

وَكَأَيِّنْ مِنْ قَرْيَةٍ أَمْلَيْتُ لَهَا وَهِيَ ظَالِمَةٌ ثُمَّ أَخَذْتُهَا وَإِلَيَّ الْمَصِيرُ  [ And to many townships I gave respite while they were wrongdoing. Then (in the end) I seized them. And to Me is the final return (of all). ]

Juz 17, Al-Hajj, Verse 049

Say (O' Prophet  ﷺ) : 'O mankind! Surely I am a manifest Warner to you. ]

Juz 17, Al-Hajj, Verse 050

Those who believe and do good deeds, they shall have forgiveness and an honorable sustenance. ]

Juz 17, Al-Hajj, Verse 051

But those who strive to discredit Our revelations, they will be the residents of the Hell.' ]

Juz 17, Al-Hajj, Verse 052

وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا مِنْ قَبْلِكَ مِنْ رَسُولٍ وَلَا نَبِيٍّ إِلَّا إِذَا تَمَنَّى أَلْقَى الشَّيْطَانُ فِي أُمْنِيَّتِهِ فَيَنْسَخُ اللَّهُ مَا يُلْقِي الشَّيْطَانُ ثُمَّ يُحْكِمُ اللَّهُ آَيَاتِهِ وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ [ Never did We send an Apostle or a Prophet before you,  but that when he recited (Allah's Revelations to the people) Satan would make insinuations (about these Revelations, prompting people to misconstrue them in many wrong senses, rather than the right one). But Allah abrogates whatever insinuations Satan may make, and then He confirms and establishes His Revelations. Allah is All Knowing, All Wise. ]
