JUZ 21.4  OTLU MA OOHIYA  (اتْلُ مَا أُوحِيَ)

سورة لقمان

LUQMAN

Luqman | Sura # 31| 34 Verses | Makkan

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 001

الم  [ Alif-Laam-Meem ]

'Alif-Laam-Meem' is known as ‘Solemn Verse' (Ayat-e-Muqatta'at - آیتِ مقطعات).

Fourteen Arabic alphabets have been used, in varied combinations,  in  14 ‘Solemn Verses' (Ayaat-e-Muqatta'at - آیاتِ مقطعات) in the form of initials  of  29 Chapters (سورة) of holy Quran.   Alif-Laam-Meem ( الم  )  is one of them.

Since Quran is 'Mubeen' (الْمُبِينِ);  its description is clear and manifest. The meanings of all the verses of Quran, including  'Solemn Verses' (آیاتِ مقطعات) are surely known to its principle addressee, ie., Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).  It is also likely that Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) has informed the meanings of these Verses to some of his Sahabah and  Awliya Allah.

We believe  in whatever is meant by the 'Solemn Verses' (آیاتِ مقطعات) by Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His Apostle Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).

Since we have been commanded to read the Quran carefully and try to understand the significance of every verse of the Quran, we do ponder over these verses.  And when we think, by focusing our attention towards Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His Apostle Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) for guidance,  it comes to our mind that the 'Solemn Verses' (آیاتِ مقطعات) are actually the 'Solemn Titles of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) given by Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) throughout the Quran.  Our understanding is based on the fact that Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) has addressed Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) in the Quran by specific names, like Muzzammil (مزمل - O' beloved who covers self  in a coverlet), Muddassir (مدثر  -  O' beloved, who covers self in a bed sheet).  With this understanding, it is most likely that  Prophet’s (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) other names / titles  have been mentioned in Quran  by denoting certain initials/alphabets.

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 002

تِلْكَ آَيَاتُ الْكِتَابِ الْحَكِيمِ [ These are the verses of the Book of Wisdom, ]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 003

هُدًى وَرَحْمَةً لِلْمُحْسِنِينَ [ and a guidance and mercy for those who are pious,  ]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 004

الَّذِينَ يُقِيمُونَ الصَّلَاةَ وَيُؤْتُونَ الزَّكَاةَ وَهُمْ بِالْآَخِرَةِ هُمْ يُوقِنُونَ [ those who establish Salah and pay Zakat and who certainly believe in Hereafter.   ]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 005

أُولَئِكَ عَلَى هُدًى مِنْ رَبِّهِمْ وَأُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ [ They are rightly guided by their Lord and those are the successful ones.    ]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 006

وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ يَشْتَرِي لَهْوَ الْحَدِيثِ لِيُضِلَّ عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ وَيَتَّخِذَهَا هُزُوًا أُولَئِكَ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُهِينٌ [ Some people prefer idle talk (over Allah's message), and make a mockery of it,  in order to lead those without knowledge,  away from Allah's path.  They will have a humiliating punishment.  ]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 007

وَإِذَا تُتْلَى عَلَيْهِ آَيَاتُنَا وَلَّى مُسْتَكْبِرًا كَأَنْ لَمْ يَسْمَعْهَا كَأَنَّ فِي أُذُنَيْهِ وَقْرًا فَبَشِّرْهُ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ [ When Our revelations are recited to such a person, he turns his face away in arrogance as if he did not hear them or as if his ears are sealed. Announce to him the news of a painful punishment.    ]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 008

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ آَمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ لَهُمْ جَنَّاتُ النَّعِيمِ [ Surely, those who believe and do righteous deeds, for them are gardens of delight (in Paradise).   ]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 009

خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا وَعْدَ اللَّهِ حَقًّا وَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ [ They will abide there in eternally. Allah's promise is true; and He is the Almighty and All Wise.   ]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 010

خَلَقَ السَّمَوَاتِ بِغَيْرِ عَمَدٍ تَرَوْنَهَا وَأَلْقَى فِي الْأَرْضِ رَوَاسِيَ أَنْ تَمِيدَ بِكُمْ وَبَثَّ فِيهَا مِنْ كُلِّ دَابَّةٍ وَأَنْزَلْنَا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً فَأَنْبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِنْ كُلِّ زَوْجٍ كَرِيمٍ [ He has created the heavens without any pillars that you see, has set firm mountains on the earth lest it should shake with you.  And He has scattered in it all kinds of animals. And We send down rain from the sky and We cause plants of every noble kind to grow in it.  ]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 011

هَذَا خَلْقُ اللَّهِ فَأَرُونِي مَاذَا خَلَقَ الَّذِينَ مِنْ دُونِهِ بَلِ الظَّالِمُونَ فِي ضَلَالٍ مُبِينٍ [ This is the creation of Allah. Now show Me what others besides Him have created. Rather the wrongdoers are in manifest error! ]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 012

وَلَقَدْ آَتَيْنَا لُقْمَانَ الْحِكْمَةَ أَنِ اشْكُرْ لِلَّهِ وَمَنْ يَشْكُرْ فَإِنَّمَا يَشْكُرُ لِنَفْسِهِ وَمَنْ كَفَرَ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ غَنِيٌّ حَمِيدٌ [ We gave Luqman Wisdom (enjoining) 'Be grateful to Allah. Whoever is grateful does so only for his own good, (whereas) whoever is ungrateful (should know that) Allah is rich beyond need and praiseworthy.]

As has been the case with some prophets whose names have been mentioned in Quran,  names of certain Awliya Allah who were the followers of earlier prophets,  have also been mentioned in Quran. Luqman (عليه السلام) is one of the Awliya Allah who lived during times of earlier prophets,  before Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 013

وَإِذْ قَالَ لُقْمَانُ لِابْنِهِ وَهُوَ يَعِظُهُ يَا بُنَيَّ لَا تُشْرِكْ بِاللَّهِ إِنَّ الشِّرْكَ لَظُلْمٌ عَظِيمٌ [ And (remember) when Luqman was advising his son, said to him : 'O my son, don’t join in worship,  others with Allah.  Surely, joining others in worship with Allah is a great wrong indeed.']

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 014

وَوَصَّيْنَا الْإِنْسَانَ بِوَالِدَيْهِ حَمَلَتْهُ أُمُّهُ وَهْنًا عَلَى وَهْنٍ وَفِصَالُهُ فِي عَامَيْنِ أَنِ اشْكُرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيْكَ إِلَيَّ الْمَصِيرُ [ And We have commanded people to (honor) their parents. Their mothers bore them through hardship upon hardship, and their weaning takes two years.  So be grateful to Me and your parents. To Me is the final return.]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 015

وَإِنْ جَاهَدَاكَ عَلى أَنْ تُشْرِكَ بِي مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِ عِلْمٌ فَلَا تُطِعْهُمَا وَصَاحِبْهُمَا فِي الدُّنْيَا مَعْرُوفًا وَاتَّبِعْ سَبِيلَ مَنْ أَنَابَ إِلَيَّ ثُمَّ إِلَيَّ مَرْجِعُكُمْ فَأُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ [ But if they pressure you to associate with Me what you have no knowledge of, do not obey them. Still keep their company in this world courteously, and follow the way of those who turn to Me (in devotion). Then to Me you will (all) return, and then I will inform you of what you used to do.]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 016

يَا بُنَيَّ إِنَّهَا إِنْ تَكُ مِثْقَالَ حَبَّةٍ مِنْ خَرْدَلٍ فَتَكُنْ فِي صَخْرَةٍ أَوْ فِي السَّمَوَاتِ أَوْ فِي الْأَرْضِ يَأْتِ بِهَا اللَّهُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَطِيفٌ خَبِيرٌ [ 'My son, if something weighs as little as a mustard seed and should be within a rock or (anywhere) in the heavens or in the earth, Allah will bring it forth. Allah is Most Subtle, All Aware. ]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 017

يَا بُنَيَّ أَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ وَأْمُرْ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَانْهَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ وَاصْبِرْ عَلَى مَا أَصَابَكَ إِنَّ ذَلِكَ مِنْ عَزْمِ الْأُمُورِ [ O' My son, establish Salah and command what is right and forbid what is wrong and be steadfast in the face of all that happens to you.  That is certainly the most resolute course to follow. ]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 018

وَلَا تُصَعِّرْ خَدَّكَ لِلنَّاسِ وَلَا تَمْشِ فِي الْأَرْضِ مَرَحًا إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ كُلَّ مُخْتَالٍ فَخُورٍ [ And do not turn your face away (with pride) from people,  nor walk in pride on the earth. Surely, Allah does not like any arrogant person. ]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 019

وَاقْصِدْ فِي مَشْيِكَ وَاغْضُضْ مِنْ صَوْتِكَ إِنَّ أَنْكَرَ الْأَصْوَاتِ لَصَوْتُ الْحَمِيرِ [ Rather, be modest when you walk and keep your voice subdued when you talk. Indeed, the harshest of all voices is that of a donkey. ]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 020

أَلَمْ تَرَوْا أَنَّ اللَّهَ سَخَّرَ لَكُمْ مَا فِي السَّمَوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَأَسْبَغَ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعَمَهُ ظَاهِرَةً وَبَاطِنَةً وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ يُجَادِلُ فِي اللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ وَلَا هُدًى وَلَا كِتَابٍ مُنِيرٍ [ Don’t you see that Allah has subjected for you whatever is in the heavens and in the earth, and has completed His Graces upon you, (both) apparent (seen) and hidden (unseen)? Yet, there are some people who dispute about Allah without knowledge or guidance or a book (scripture) giving light. ]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 021

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ اتَّبِعُوا مَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ قَالُوا بَلْ نَتَّبِعُ مَا وَجَدْنَا عَلَيْهِ آَبَاءَنَا أَوَلَوْ كَانَ الشَّيْطَانُ يَدْعُوهُمْ إِلَى عَذَابِ السَّعِيرِ [ When they are asked to follow what Allah has revealed, they reply : 'Nay, we shall follow the ways upon which we found our forefathers.'  What! Will they still follow them even though Satan invites them to the punishment of the blazing Fire. ]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 022

وَمَنْ يُسْلِمْ وَجْهَهُ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَهُوَ مُحْسِنٌ فَقَدِ اسْتَمْسَكَ بِالْعُرْوَةِ الْوُثْقَى وَإِلَى اللَّهِ عَاقِبَةُ الْأُمُورِ  [ He who surrenders himself to Allah and leads a righteous life has indeed grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold;  as with Allah lies the outcome of all matters.]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 023

وَمَنْ كَفَرَ فَلَا يَحْزُنْكَ كُفْرُهُ إِلَيْنَا مَرْجِعُهُمْ فَنُنَبِّئُهُمْ بِمَا عَمِلُوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ بِذَاتِ الصُّدُورِ  [ And (O' Prophet ﷺ)  do not let the denial of those who continue to deny the truth,  grieve you.   To Us is their return and We shall inform them what they have done.  Surely, Allah has knowledge of all that is (Hidden) in the hearts (of the people). ]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 024

نُمَتِّعُهُمْ قَلِيلًا ثُمَّ نَضْطَرُّهُمْ إِلَى عَذَابٍ غَلِيظٍ [ We will (continue to) provide for them to enjoy themselves for a short while (in this life), then they will be subjected to a harsh punishment (as a consequence of their wrongdoings.  ]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 025

وَلَئِنْ سَأَلْتَهُمْ مَنْ خَلَقَ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ لَيَقُولُنَّ اللَّهُ قُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ بَلْ أَكْثَرُهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ [ If you were to ask them : 'Who created the heavens and the earth?' They will certainly reply : 'Allah.'   Say : 'All praise and gratitude is for Allah.' Yet most of them do not know. ]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 026

لِلَّهِ مَا فِي السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ الْغَنِيُّ الْحَمِيدُ [ To Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and earth; surely Allah is the One Who is free of all wants, worthy of all praise. ]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 027

وَلَوْ أَنَّمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ مِنْ شَجَرَةٍ أَقْلَامٌ وَالْبَحْرُ يَمُدُّهُ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ سَبْعَةُ أَبْحُرٍ مَا نَفِدَتْ كَلِمَاتُ اللَّهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ [ If all the trees on earth were pens and the ocean (were ink), refilled by seven other oceans, the Words of Allah would not be exhausted.  Surely Allah is Almighty, All Wise.]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 028

مَا خَلْقُكُمْ وَلَا بَعْثُكُمْ إِلَّا كَنَفْسٍ وَاحِدَةٍ إِنَّ اللَّهَ سَمِيعٌ بَصِيرٌ [ Creating and resurrecting all of you (the entire humanity for Allah) is (as simple as) creating and resurrecting a single human being.  Allah is All Hearing and All Seeing. ]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 029

أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ يُولِجُ اللَّيْلَ فِي النَّهَارِ وَيُولِجُ النَّهَارَ فِي اللَّيْلِ وَسَخَّرَ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ كُلٌّ يَجْرِي إِلَى أَجَلٍ مُسَمًّى وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرٌ [ Don’t you  see (O' People) that Allah merges the night into the day and merges the day into the night, and has subjected the sun and the moon (to the laws of Allah), each running (its course) for an appointed term; and that Allah is aware of all that you do? ]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 030

ذَلِكَ بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ الْحَقُّ وَأَنَّ مَا يَدْعُونَ مِنْ دُونِهِ الْبَاطِلُ وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ الْعَلِيُّ الْكَبِيرُ [ That is because Allah is the Truth and all those which they invoke besides Him are false, and He is the High, the Great. ]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 031

أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّ الْفُلْكَ تَجْرِي فِي الْبَحْرِ بِنِعْمَةِ اللَّهِ لِيُرِيَكُمْ مِنْ آَيَاتِهِ إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لَآَيَاتٍ لِكُلِّ صَبَّارٍ شَكُورٍ [ Do you not see how the ships sail through the ocean by the grace of Allah so that He may show you some of His signs? Surely there are signs in this for every patient, grateful person. ]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 032

وَإِذَا غَشِيَهُمْ مَوْجٌ كَالظُّلَلِ دَعَوُا اللَّهَ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ الدِّينَ فَلَمَّا نَجَّاهُمْ إِلَى الْبَرِّ فَمِنْهُمْ مُقْتَصِدٌ وَمَا يَجْحَدُ بِآَيَاتِنَا إِلَّا كُلُّ خَتَّارٍ كَفُورٍ [ And when they are overwhelmed by waves like mountains, they cry out to Allah (alone) in sincere devotion. But when He delivers them (safely) to shore, only some become relatively grateful. And none rejects Our signs except whoever is deceitful, ungrateful. ]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 033

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اتَّقُوا رَبَّكُمْ وَاخْشَوْا يَوْمًا لَا يَجْزِي وَالِدٌ عَنْ وَلَدِهِ وَلَا مَوْلُودٌ هُوَ جَازٍ عَنْ وَالِدِهِ شَيْئًا إِنَّ وَعْدَ اللَّهِ حَقٌّ فَلَا تَغُرَّنَّكُمُ الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا وَلَا يَغُرَّنَّكُمْ بِاللَّهِ الْغَرُورُ [ O' mankind, have fear of your Lord and fear that Day no parent will be of any benefit to their child, nor will a child be of any benefit to his parents. Surely the promise of Allah is true. Let neither the life of this world deceive you,  nor the Deceiver (Satan) deceive you concerning Allah. ]

Juz 21, Luqman, Verse 034

He sends down the rain, and knows what is in the wombs. No one knows what he/she will earn for tomorrow, and no one knows in what land he/she will die. Surely Allah is knowledgeable and fully aware (of all things).   ]

The meanings of the verse are very much clear.   Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) knows what is in the wombs means, how many children will be born to an individual woman, and what will be their nature, life span, where they will live and where they will die and what will be their final destination in Hereafter -  Hell or Paradise.  Surely, all these details are only known to Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ).
