THE ORIGINATOR

Faatir| Sura # 35| 45 Verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

Juz 22, Faatir, Verse 001

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ فَاطِرِ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ جَاعِلِ الْمَلَائِكَةِ رُسُلًا أُولِي أَجْنِحَةٍ مَثْنَى وَثُلَاثَ وَرُبَاعَ يَزِيدُ فِي الْخَلْقِ مَا يَشَاءُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ [ All praise is for Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, Who has made angels with 2, 3 or 4 (pairs of) wings as Messengers. He adds to creation as He wills. Surely, Allah has power over all things. ]

Juz 22, Faatir, Verse 002

مَا يَفْتَحِ اللَّهُ لِلنَّاسِ مِنْ رَحْمَةٍ فَلَا مُمْسِكَ لَهَا وَمَا يُمْسِكْ فَلَا مُرْسِلَ لَهُ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ وَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ [ There is none who can take away the favors He has bestowed on people; and there is none, apart from Him, to restore what He has withheld. He is the Almighty, All Wise. ]

Juz 22, Faatir, Verse 003

(O' Mankind) Remember the Grace of Allah upon you! Is there any creator other than Allah who provides for you from the heaven and the earth? There is no one worthy of worship but He.  So (reflect) what lies are you inventing? ]

Juz 22, Faatir, Verse 004

[And if they deny you (O' Apostle ﷺ, it is not new), surely Apostles were denied before you. And to Allah all matters return (for decision). ]

Juz 22, Faatir, Verse 005

Certainly the promise of Allah is true. Therefore let not the life of this world deceive you nor let the chief deceiver (Satan) deceive you about Allah. ]

Juz 22, Faatir, Verse 006

إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ فَاتَّخِذُوهُ عَدُوًّا إِنَّمَا يَدْعُو حِزْبَهُ لِيَكُونُوا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ السَّعِيرِ [ Surely, Satan is an enemy to you, so take him as an enemy. He only invites his followers so that they may become the inmates of the blazing Fire. ]

Juz 22, Faatir, Verse 007

الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ شَدِيدٌ وَالَّذِينَ آَمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ لَهُمْ مَغْفِرَةٌ وَأَجْرٌ كَبِيرٌ [ Those who disbelieve will have severe punishment, while those who believe and act good will have forgiveness and great reward. ]

Juz 22, Faatir, Verse 008

أَفَمَنْ زُيِّنَ لَهُ سُوءُ عَمَلِهِ فَرَآَهُ حَسَنًا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ يُضِلُّ مَنْ يَشَاءُ وَيَهْدِي مَنْ يَشَاءُ فَلَا تَذْهَبْ نَفْسُكَ عَلَيْهِمْ حَسَرَاتٍ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ بِمَا يَصْنَعُونَ [ Are those,  whose evil deeds are made so appealing to them,  that they deem it good (like those who are rightly guided and feel good about their righteous deeds)? (It is) certainly Allah (Who) leaves astray whoever He wills, and guides whoever He wills.  So (O' Prophet ﷺ) do not grieve yourself to death over them.   Surely Allah is aware of what they do. ]

Juz 22, Faatir, Verse 009

وَاللَّهُ الَّذِي أَرْسَلَ الرِّيَاحَ فَتُثِيرُ سَحَابًا فَسُقْنَاهُ إِلَى بَلَدٍ مَيِّتٍ فَأَحْيَيْنَا بِهِ الْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَا كَذَلِكَ النُّشُورُ [ It is Allah who sends the winds, which lift the clouds, which We then drive to a dead land and thereby bring the earth to life after its death.   Such is the Resurrection. ]

Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is explaining how Resurrection takes place by giving the example of the dead land on which nothing can be grown.  However, when the rain falls, it becomes alive again and everything starts growing on it all over again.

Resurrection of human beings is simpler than the above.  When the trumpet will be blown the second time, what Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) will do is, He will say 'Be' (كُنْ), and all people will come into being instantly.
It is in Quran - إِنَّمَا أَمْرُهُ إِذَا أَرَادَ شَيْئًا أَن يَقُولَ لَهُ كُن فَيَكُونُ [  When Allah intends to create something, He commands 'Be', and instantly it comes into existence].  (Yaseen - 82)
All of them will be provided with new bodies as per the requirement of that day and they all will be gathered at one place to answer for their deeds.

Even when we die, we are transferred to 'the world after death'.  We enter in that world with a new body as per the requirement of that world.  Our physical body that was provided to us for our stay in this world is buried into earth. This body often gets decomposed and become part of dust.

I have written a book titled 'The Life after Death' providing detailed information in this context.

Juz 22, Faatir, Verse 010

مَنْ كَانَ يُرِيدُ الْعِزَّةَ فَلِلَّهِ الْعِزَّةُ جَمِيعًا إِلَيْهِ يَصْعَدُ الْكَلِمُ الطَّيِّبُ وَالْعَمَلُ الصَّالِحُ يَرْفَعُهُ وَالَّذِينَ يَمْكُرُونَ السَّيِّئَاتِ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ شَدِيدٌ وَمَكْرُ أُولَئِكَ هُوَ يَبُورُ [ The one who covets (and strives for) honor and glory (should know that) the honor and might belong entirely to Allah. The worthy word of prayer ascends up to reach Him. The righteous deeds make it rise. As for those who plot evil, they will suffer a severe punishment. And the plotting of such (people˺) is doomed (to fail). ]

People get involved in all kinds of corruption and dishonesty to climb on the ladder of wealth and power in this world and feel proud about it.  Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is saying that the honor and might belongs only to Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ).  And if you want honor and success in this world and in Hereafter, the only way is to have right belief and do good deeds.

Juz 22, Faatir, Verse 011

وَاللَّهُ خَلَقَكُمْ مِنْ تُرَابٍ ثُمَّ مِنْ نُطْفَةٍ ثُمَّ جَعَلَكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا وَمَا تَحْمِلُ مِنْ أُنْثَى وَلَا تَضَعُ إِلَّا بِعِلْمِهِ وَمَا يُعَمَّرُ مِنْ مُعَمَّرٍ وَلَا يُنْقَصُ مِنْ عُمُرِهِ إِلَّا فِي كِتَابٍ إِنَّ ذَلِكَ عَلَى اللَّهِ يَسِيرٌ [ And (it is) Allah (Who) created you from dust, then (developed you) from a sperm-drop, then made you into pairs. No female ever conceives or delivers without His knowledge.  And no one’s life is made long or cut short but is (written) in a Record.  That is certainly easy for Allah. ]

Juz 22, Faatir, Verse 012

وَمَا يَسْتَوِي الْبَحْرَانِ هَذَا عَذْبٌ فُرَاتٌ سَائِغٌ شَرَابُهُ وَهَذَا مِلْحٌ أُجَاجٌ وَمِنْ كُلٍّ تَأْكُلُونَ لَحْمًا طَرِيًّا وَتَسْتَخْرِجُونَ حِلْيَةً تَلْبَسُونَهَا وَتَرَى الْفُلْكَ فِيهِ مَوَاخِرَ لِتَبْتَغُوا مِنْ فَضْلِهِ وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ  [ The two bodies of water are not alike: one is fresh, palatable, and pleasant to drink and the other is salty and bitter. Yet from them both,  you eat tender food and extract ornaments to wear. And you see the ships sailing their way through both, so you may seek His bounty and be grateful (to Him). ]

Juz 22, Faatir, Verse 013

يُولِجُ اللَّيْلَ فِي النَّهَارِ وَيُولِجُ النَّهَارَ فِي اللَّيْلِ وَسَخَّرَ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ كُلٌّ يَجْرِي لِأَجَلٍ مُسَمًّى ذَلِكُمُ اللَّهُ رَبُّكُمْ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَالَّذِينَ تَدْعُونَ مِنْ دُونِهِ مَا يَمْلِكُونَ مِنْ قِطْمِيرٍ  [ He merges the night into the day and the day into the night,, and He has made the sun and the moon to serve you; each one follows its course for an appointed term. Such is Allah, your Lord; His is the kingdom; and those to whom you pray besides Him, do not even own a thread of a date-stone. ]

Juz 22, Faatir, Verse 014

إِنْ تَدْعُوهُمْ لَا يَسْمَعُوا دُعَاءَكُمْ وَلَوْ سَمِعُوا مَا اسْتَجَابُوا لَكُمْ وَيَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ يَكْفُرُونَ بِشِرْكِكُمْ وَلَا يُنَبِّئُكَ مِثْلُ خَبِيرٍ  [ You pray to them, but they do not hear your call; and even if they heard you, they could not answer your prayer; and on the Day of Resurrection they will deny you having worshiped them. None can acquaint you (with the reality) as He, who is informed of everything (Allah). ]

Juz 22, Faatir, Verse 015

It is you who stand in need of Allah, while Allah  is (absolutely independent), Self-Sufficient and Praiseworthy. ]

Juz 22, Faatir, Verse 016

If He willed, He could eliminate you and produce a new creation (in your place). ]

Juz 22, Faatir, Verse 017

And that is not difficult for Allah (at all). ]

Juz 22, Faatir, Verse 018

And if a sin-burdened person cries for help with his burden, none of it will be carried even by a close relative. You (O Prophet  ﷺ) can only warn those who stand in awe of their Lord without seeing Him and establish Salah. Whoever purifies themselves, they only do so for their own good.  And to Allah is the final return (of everyone). ]

Juz 22, Faatir, Verse 019

The blind and the seeing are not alike, ]

Juz 22, Faatir, Verse 020

وَلَا الظُّلُمَاتُ وَلَا النُّورُ [ nor are the depth of darkness and the light); ]

Juz 22, Faatir, Verse 021

وَلَا الظِّلُّ وَلَا الْحَرُورُ  [nor are the (chilly) shade and the (genial - gracious) heat of the sun,  ]

Juz 22, Faatir, Verse 022

وَمَا يَسْتَوِي الْأَحْيَاءُ وَلَا الْأَمْوَاتُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُسْمِعُ مَنْ يَشَاءُ وَمَا أَنْتَ بِمُسْمِعٍ مَنْ فِي الْقُبُورِ [ nor are alike those that are living and those that are dead, Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) can make any, that He wills, to hear, but you (O’ Prophet - صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) cannot make those hear who are  in graves. ]

The above verse  refers to Makkan pagans who are  referred to 'as dead people' because they do not have the light of Iman in their hearts.  But Wahhabis/Salafis/Deobandis/Kharijis and their like minded groups impose the above verse on Prophets/Sahabah and Awliya Allah and scare innocent Muslims from visiting their graves for barakah saying that they cannot hear you.

It is in Hadith -  Abdullah bin Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) considered the Khawarij (and their like minded groups, Salafis, Deobandis, Wahhabis etc.) the worst of Allah's creation, and said, 'Verily they take the verses that were revealed about unbelievers and use them against the believers.  (Bukhari)

To know the meaning of the above verse, let us study 3 verses, immediately before this verse.  We have provided below all 4 verses together.

It is in Quran  –وَمَا يَسْتَوِي الْأَعْمَىٰ وَالْبَصِيرُ  -  وَلَا الظُّلُمَاتُ وَلَا النُّورُ - وَلَا الظِّلُّ وَلَا الْحَرُورُ  -   وَمَا يَسْتَوِي  الْأَحْيَاءُ وَلَا الْأَمْوَاتُ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُسْمِعُ مَن يَشَاءُ ۖ وَمَا أَنتَ بِمُسْمِعٍ مَّن فِي الْقُبُورِ  [ The blind and the seeing are not alike (verse 19).   Nor are the depth of darkness and the light (verse 20). Nor are the (chilly) shade and the (genial - gracious) heat of the sun (verse 21).  Nor are alike those that are living and those that are dead, Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) can make any, that He wills, to hear, but you (O’ Prophet ) cannot make those hear (accept Iman) who are  in graves (verse 22). (Fater - 19-22)

Verse 19 -  ‘The blind and the seeing are not alike’.

This has reference to Makkan polytheists.  Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is referring them as blind because they do not have the light of Iman in their hearts.

Verse 20  - ‘The depth of darkness and light is not alike’.

This means, the disbelievers' hearts are  buried in the depth of  darkness, therefore they cannot be compared with Muslims whose hearts are enlightened with Iman.

Verse 21 - 'The chilly shade and gracious heat of the sun cannot be alike'.

Since, Makkan pagans hearts are buried in the depth of darkness,  it is referred as 'chilly shade' which cannot benefit from the heat of the sun.  Meaning, the  polytheists of Makka are not benefited from the gracious heat of Iman that is emanating from Prophet Mohammad

Verse 22 has three parts.

Part (22.1) - ‘The living and dead are not alike’.

This means, the polytheists of Makka and Muslims are not the same. Muslims are referred as living beings because of their Iman.  As Makkan pagans' hearts are  buried in the depth of darkness because of their Idol worship, they are referred  as 'dead people'.

Part (22.2) - 'Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) can make any that He wills to hear'.

Allah Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) says that He has the omnipotence (power) to make anyone hear - meaning, He can give Iman to anyone he wishes.

Part (22.3) - (O’ Prophet  ﷺ) you cannot make those dead bodies listen that are in graves’.

Since  the entire discussion is about Makkan Mushrikeen whose hearts are buried in the depth of darkness because of their Idol worship, this part of the verse 22.3 naturally refers to them.  Here, the word 'grave' is used as a metaphor with reference to the hearts of Makkan Pagans which are buried in the depth of darkness as that of graves of the Mushrikeen.  The graves of Muslims are not dark.  They are illuminated by the light of Iman.

Thus, the entire sequence of verses (Fater - 19-22), mentioned above refer to the Makkan polytheists and not to the actual dead Muslims.

(And they who reject Our verses ( and those who reject the real meanings and/or misinterpret them and draw wrong meanings/conclusions from them) are deaf and dumb, in utter darkness; whom Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) pleases He causes to err and whom He pleases He puts on the right path). (Al-An'aam - 39).

(ii) It is in Hadith - Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said: 'He who remembers his Lord and he who does not,  are like the living and the dead. (Muslim).

(iii) It is in Hadith - Abu Musa (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrates that the Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) said, “He who remembers his Lord and he who does not are like the living and the dead.'

(iv) It is in Hadith  - Abu Musa (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrates that the Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) said, 'The house in which Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is remembered and the one in which Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is not remembered are like the living and the dead.']
