In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 001

The revelation of this Book (the Quran) is from Allah, the Almighty, the Wise.]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 002

إِنَّا أَنْزَلْنَا إِلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ بِالْحَقِّ فَاعْبُدِ اللَّهَ مُخْلِصًا لَهُ الدِّينَ [ Certainly We have revealed to you (O' Prophet ﷺ) the Book with the Truth. Therefore pray Allah, offering Him your sincere obedience.]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 003

As for those who take other protectors (idols) besides Him, (saying), 'We worship them only because they may bring us closer to Allah' (are misguided). Surely Allah will judge between all,  regarding what they differed about. Allah certainly does not guide whoever is persistent in lying and disbelief.]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 004

لَوْ أَرَادَ اللَّهُ أَنْ يَتَّخِذَ وَلَدًا لَاصْطَفَى مِمَّا يَخْلُقُ مَا يَشَاءُ سُبْحَانَهُ هُوَ اللَّهُ الْوَاحِدُ الْقَهَّارُ [ If Allah had intended to take a son, He could have chosen anyone He willed from whatever He created.  Glory be to Him (that He should have a son).! He is Allah, the One God, the One who holds absolute sway over all that exists. ]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 005

خَلَقَ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ بِالْحَقِّ يُكَوِّرُ اللَّيْلَ عَلَى النَّهَارِ وَيُكَوِّرُ النَّهَارَ عَلَى اللَّيْلِ وَسَخَّرَ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ كُلٌّ يَجْرِي لِأَجَلٍ مُسَمًّى أَلَا هُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْغَفَّارُ [ He has created the heavens and the earth with the truth. He makes the night overtake the day and makes the day overtake the night. He has subjected the sun and the moon, each is running for an appointed term. Surely, He is the Almighty, Most Forgiving. ]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 006

خَلَقَكُمْ مِنْ نَفْسٍ وَاحِدَةٍ ثُمَّ جَعَلَ مِنْهَا زَوْجَهَا وَأَنْزَلَ لَكُمْ مِنَ الْأَنْعَامِ ثَمَانِيَةَ أَزْوَاجٍ يَخْلُقُكُمْ فِي بُطُونِ أُمَّهَاتِكُمْ خَلْقًا مِنْ بَعْدِ خَلْقٍ فِي ظُلُمَاتٍ ثَلَاثٍ ذَلِكُمُ اللَّهُ رَبُّكُمْ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ فَأَنَّى تُصْرَفُونَ  [ He has created you all from a single Nafs (Adam عليه السلام); then made his wife (Hawwa عليها السلام) from him. He has sent down for you of cattle 8 in pairs. He creates you in the wombs of your mothers, creation after creation in 3 layers of darkness.  Such is Allah, your Lord. The kingdom belongs to Him; there is no one worthy of worship but He. How can you then turn away? ]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 007

إِنْ تَكْفُرُوا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ غَنِيٌّ عَنْكُمْ وَلَا يَرْضَى لِعِبَادِهِ الْكُفْرَ وَإِنْ تَشْكُرُوا يَرْضَهُ لَكُمْ وَلَا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَى ثُمَّ إِلَى رَبِّكُمْ مَرْجِعُكُمْ فَيُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ إِنَّهُ عَلِيمٌ بِذَاتِ الصُّدُورِ   [ If you disbelieve, then you should know that Allah does not need you. He does not like ingratitude from His servants. Therefore, if you are grateful,  He is pleased with you. On the Day of Judgement, no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another.  Ultimately, all of you have to return to your Lord. Then He will tell you the truth of all that you did in this life.  Surely He knows even the secrets of your hearts. ]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 008

وَإِذَا مَسَّ الْإِنْسَانَ ضُرٌّ دَعَا رَبَّهُ مُنِيبًا إِلَيْهِ ثُمَّ إِذَا خَوَّلَهُ نِعْمَةً مِنْهُ نَسِيَ مَا كَانَ يَدْعُو إِلَيْهِ مِنْ قَبْلُ وَجَعَلَ لِلَّهِ أَنْدَادًا لِيُضِلَّ عَنْ سَبِيلِهِ قُلْ تَمَتَّعْ بِكُفْرِكَ قَلِيلًا إِنَّكَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّارِ   [ When a  man encounters some hard times, he calls upon his Lord, turning to Him in repentance. But when He bestows a favor from Him, he forget what he had supplicated to Him before, and  set up rivals to Allah in order to mislead others from His Way.   Say : 'Take pleasure in your disbelief for a while. Surely, you will be one of the inmates of the fire!' ]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 009

أَمَّنْ هُوَ قَانِتٌ آَنَاءَ اللَّيْلِ سَاجِدًا وَقَائِمًا يَحْذَرُ الْآَخِرَةَ وَيَرْجُواْ رَحْمَةَ رَبِّهِ قُلْ هَلْ يَسْتَوِي الَّذِينَ يَعْلَمُونَ وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ إِنَّمَا يَتَذَكَّرُ أُولُواْ الْأَلْبَابِ   [ Can the one who is obedient to Allah, prostrating or standing (in prayer) during the Hours of the night, fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the Mercy of the Lord (be compared with a disbeliever)? Say : 'Are those who know,  equal to those who don’t know?' It is only the people of understanding who will remember. ]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 010

قُلْ يَا عِبَادِ الَّذِينَ آَمَنُوا اتَّقُوا رَبَّكُمْ لِلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا فِي هَذِهِ الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةٌ وَأَرْضُ اللَّهِ وَاسِعَةٌ إِنَّمَا يُوَفَّى الصَّابِرُونَ أَجْرَهُمْ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ   [ Say : O' My servants who have truly believed, fear your Lord; those who will do good deeds in this world shall receive a good reward. If it has become difficult to follow the Right Way where you live, then migrate, you will find that Allah’s earth is spacious. Those who endure with patience will be given limitless rewards.' ]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 011

Say : 'I am commanded to pray Allah and serve none but Him, ]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 012

وَأُمِرْتُ لِأَنْ أَكُونَ أَوَّلَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ   [ and I am commanded to be the first of those who submit themselves to Allah as Muslims.' ]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 013

Say : 'Surely, if I disobey my Lord (as per your desire), I am afraid of the punishment of a great Day.' ]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 014

Say : 'Allah Alone I pray, and Him Alone I serve. ]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 015

فَاعْبُدُوا مَا شِئْتُمْ مِنْ دُونِهِ قُلْ إِنَّ الْخَاسِرِينَ الَّذِينَ خَسِرُوا أَنْفُسَهُمْ وَأَهْلِيهِمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ أَلَا ذَلِكَ هُوَ الْخُسْرَانُ الْمُبِينُ [ (As for yourselves, I have conveyed to you the Truth and if you do not believe, then) 'worship what you want besides Him.' Say : 'The real losers are those who will lose themselves as well their families on the Day of Resurrection. That will indeed be a great Loss.' ]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 016

لَهُمْ مِنْ فَوْقِهِمْ ظُلَلٌ مِنَ النَّارِ وَمِنْ تَحْتِهِمْ ظُلَلٌ ذَلِكَ يُخَوِّفُ اللَّهُ بِهِ عِبَادَهُ يَا عِبَادِ فَاتَّقُونِ [ They will have layers of fire above and below them. That is what Allah warns His servants with.  So fear Me, O My servants! ]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 017

وَالَّذِينَ اجْتَنَبُوا الطَّاغُوتَ أَنْ يَعْبُدُوهَا وَأَنَابُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ لَهُمُ الْبُشْرَى فَبَشِّرْ عِبَادِ [ Those who avoid false deities by not worshiping them and turn to Allah in repentance, there are glad tidings for them. So announce (O' Prophet  ﷺ) the good news to My servants, ]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 018

الَّذِينَ يَسْتَمِعُونَ الْقَوْلَ فَيَتَّبِعُونَ أَحْسَنَهُ أُولَئِكَ الَّذِينَ هَدَاهُمُ اللَّهُ وَأُولَئِكَ هُمْ أُولُواْ الْأَلْبَابِ [ those who heed the advice, and implement its best features are the ones whom Allah has guided!  Such are the sensible ones.' ]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 019

أَفَمَنْ حَقَّ عَلَيْهِ كَلِمَةُ الْعَذَابِ أَفَأَنْتَ تُنْقِذُ مَنْ فِي النَّارِ [ The one who deserves the sentence of the (eternal) punishment (cannot be helped). Can you rescue the one who is (slated to be) in the fire? ]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 020

لَكِنِ الَّذِينَ اتَّقَوْا رَبَّهُمْ لَهُمْ غُرَفٌ مِنْ فَوْقِهَا غُرَفٌ مَبْنِيَّةٌ تَجْرِي مِنْ تَحْتِهَا الْأَنْهَارُ وَعْدَ اللَّهِ لَا يُخْلِفُ اللَّهُ الْمِيعَادَ [ As for those who truly fear their Lord, they shall be provided lofty (residential) mansions, built with one story upon another, beneath which the rivers flow; this is the promise of Allah; Allah does not fail in His promise.]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 021

أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ أَنْزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً فَسَلَكَهُ يَنَابِيعَ فِي الْأَرْضِ ثُمَّ يُخْرِجُ بِهِ زَرْعًا مُخْتَلِفًا أَلْوَانُهُ ثُمَّ يَهِيجُ فَتَرَاهُ مُصْفَرًّا ثُمَّ يَجْعَلُهُ حُطَامًا إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لَذِكْرَى لِأُولِي الْأَلْبَابِ [ Do you not see that Allah sends down rain from the sky, channeling it through streams on the earth, then produces with it crops of various colors, then they wither and you see them turn yellow, and then He makes them dry and broken pieces.   Surely, in this, there is a reminder for people of understanding. ]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 022

أَفَمَنْ شَرَحَ اللَّهُ صَدْرَهُ لِلْإِسْلَامِ فَهُوَ عَلَى نُورٍ مِنْ رَبِّهِ فَوَيْلٌ لِلْقَاسِيَةِ قُلُوبُهُمْ مِنْ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ أُولَئِكَ فِي ضَلَالٍ مُبِينٍ [ Is the one whose heart Allah has opened to Islam and is walking in the light from his Lord,   similar to the one who has learned no lesson and is still a non-Muslim. So woe to those whose hearts are hardened against the remembrance of Allah!  They are clearly in error.]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 023

اللَّهُ نَزَّلَ أَحْسَنَ الْحَدِيثِ كِتَابًا مُتَشَابِهًا مَثَانِيَ تَقْشَعِرُّ مِنْهُ جُلُودُ الَّذِينَ يَخْشَوْنَ رَبَّهُمْ ثُمَّ تَلِينُ جُلُودُهُمْ وَقُلُوبُهُمْ إِلَى ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ ذَلِكَ هُدَى اللَّهِ يَهْدِي بِهِ مَنْ يَشَاءُ وَمَنْ يُضْلِلِ اللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُ مِنْ هَادٍ  [ Allah has revealed the most beautiful message, a Book (the Quran) consistent in its verses yet repeating its teachings in different ways. Those who fear their Lord are filled with awe when they hear it, their skins and their hearts become pliant to the remembrance of Allah.  Such is the guidance of Allah.  He guides with it,  whom He pleases. And one whom Allah leaves astray,  for him there is no guide. ]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 024

أَفَمَنْ يَتَّقِي بِوَجْهِهِ سُوءَ الْعَذَابِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَقِيلَ لِلظَّالِمِينَ ذُوقُوا مَا كُنْتُمْ تَكْسِبُونَ [ Is the one who will confront with the awful punishment on the Day of Resurrection,  (same as one who enters  into Paradise blissfully.)? It will be said to the wrongdoers, 'Taste what you earned!' ]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 025

Those before them (also) rejected (the truth), then the torment came upon them from where they least expected. ]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 026

فَأَذَاقَهُمُ اللَّهُ الْخِزْيَ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَلَعَذَابُ الْآَخِرَةِ أَكْبَرُ لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ  [ Allah  made them taste disgrace in this worldly life, but the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew. ]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 027

وَلَقَدْ ضَرَبْنَا لِلنَّاسِ فِي هَذَا الْقُرْآَنِ مِنْ كُلِّ مَثَلٍ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَذَكَّرُونَ  [ Certainly we have drawn for mankind, in this Quran, all kinds of examples, so that they may reflect and be mindful. ]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 028

(It is) the Quran (revealed) in Arabic without any distortions, so that they (the people) will fear Allah (and do good deeds). ]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 029

There is a slave man who is shared by many masters, each pulling this man to himself (is like  the man who worships other deities along with Allah), and there is another slave man who belongs entirely to one master (like the man who worships Allah Alone);  are the two alike in comparison? Praise be to Allah! But most of them do not know ]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 030

Surely  you shall die and they (unbelievers) too shall  die.]

Salafis, Deobandis, Kharaijis and their like minded groups  impose this verse on Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم)  to mean  that there is no difference between the death of Prophet Mohammad ( صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم ) and the death of a Pagan Mushrik;  in the sense that both cannot see or hear after their death.  They cite the following Hadith as a proof of their claim.

It is in Hadith - Narrated Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا): Allah's Apostle ( صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) died while Abu Bakr (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) was at a place called As-Sunah (Al-'Aliya) 'Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) stood up and said, "By Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ)! Allah's Apostle ( صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) is not dead!" 'Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) (later on) said, "By Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ)! Nothing occurred to my mind except that." He said, "Verily! Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) will resurrect him and he will cut the hands and legs of some men." Then Abu Bakr (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) came and uncovered the face of Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), kissed him and said, "Let my mother and father be sacrificed for you, (O Allah's Apostle ), you are good in life and in death. By Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) in Whose Hands my life is, Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) will never make you taste death twice." Then he went out and said, "O oath-taker! Don't be hasty." When Abu Bakr (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) spoke, 'Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) sat down. Abu Bakr (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) praised and glorified Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and said, No doubt! Whoever worshiped Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), then Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) is dead, but whoever worshiped Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ), then Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is Alive and shall never die." Then he recited  إِنَّكَ مَيِّتٌ وَإِنَّهُم مَّيِّتُونَ [ Surely you shall die and they too shall (surely) die.]  (Az-Zumur - 30).  (Bukhari Vol 5, Bk 57, # 19)

Needless to say that the above claim on their part is Kufr, a blatant and unpardonable Kufr. No person who has some common sense, can equate Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) with a Pagan Mushrik, both in this life, or in death or in Hereafter. (La Haula wala quwwata illa billah).

To understand the meaning of the above verse,  let us read a verse before this verse.  We have provided below both these verses below.

It is in Quran -  ضَرَبَ اللَّهُ مَثَلًا رَّجُلًا فِيهِ شُرَكَاءُ مُتَشَاكِسُونَ وَرَجُلًا سَلَمًا لِّرَجُلٍ هَلْ يَسْتَوِيَانِ مَثَلًا ۚ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ۚ بَلْ أَكْثَرُهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ - إِنَّكَ مَيِّتٌ وَإِنَّهُم مَّيِّتُونَ [ Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ)  puts forth a similitude : a (slave) man belonging to many partners (like those who worship others along with Allah) disputing with one another, and a (slave) man belonging entirely to one master (like those who worship Allah alone).  Are those two equal in comparison? All praises and thanks be to Allah! But most of them know not.  Surely you shall die and they too shall (surely) die.]  (Az-Zumur - 29-30)

Verse 29 establishes that the people who worship Idols are not the same as those who worship Allah  (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). Surely, the treatment, rewards and active life of Muslims  after their deaths will be different from the punishment of dead Mushrikeen.   There are many Quranic verses and Ahadith which testify that Prophets, Sahabah, Awliya Allah are alive, they can see, listen and pray for us.  This is Allah's (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) beneficence and reward for them.

Verse No. 30 describes - O' Prophet ( صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم ), you will die and these Mushrikeen will also die' - but since you are not like one of them, therefore, your state, after death, will be  exalted, totally different from their state. Your rewards and responsibilities, after death, are different from the punishment and torment of dead Mushrikeen.

[As for those who (do not have faith, and) indulge in (evil) sinful acts, do they think that We place them - both in their life and their death - on equal footing with those who have attained faith and do righteous deeds?  Bad indeed is their judgment. ]  (Al-Jaathiya - 21)

(ii) It is in Quran -   لَا يَسْتَوِي أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ وَأَصْحَابُ الْجَنَّةِ ۚ أَصْحَابُ الْجَنَّةِ هُمُ الْفَائِزُونَ  [ The inmates of Hell and inmates of Paradise are not in the same position.  Only the inmates of Paradise are felicitated.] (Al-Hashr - 20)

(iii) It is in Quran -    أُولَـٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ حَقًّا ۚ لَّهُمْ دَرَجَاتٌ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ وَمَغْفِرَةٌ وَرِزْقٌ كَرِيمٌ   [ Those are they who are truthful believers. For them are Grades (of honor) with their Lord, and pardon, and a bountiful provision. (Al-Anfal - 4)]

(iv) It is in Quran -    وَلَوْ تَرَىٰ إِذْ يَتَوَفَّى الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا ۙ الْمَلَائِكَةُ يَضْرِبُونَ وُجُوهَهُمْ وَأَدْبَارَهُمْ وَذُوقُوا عَذَابَ الْحَرِيقِ  [ If you could  see how the angels receive those who disbelieve, smiting faces and their backs and (saying) : Taste the punishment of burning! (Al-Anfal - 50)]

Juz 23, Az-Zumar, Verse 031

Then on the Day of Resurrection, your disputes shall be settled in the presence of your Lord.]
