In the name of Allah, the Compassionate and the Merciful

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 143

وَلَقَدْ كُنْتُمْ تَمَنَّوْنَ الْمَوْتَ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ تَلْقَوْهُ فَقَدْ رَأَيْتُمُوهُ وَأَنْتُمْ تَنْظُرُونَ  [ You had wished to know death (wanted to get martyred) before you faced it (in the battle); so now you have seen it before your own eyes. ]

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 144

Many Apostles have gone before him.  So, if he dies or is martyred, will you turn back and go away (from the right path)? He who turns back and goes away in haste will do no harm to Allah.   Allah will reward those who  are grateful. ]

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 145

وَمَا كَانَ لِنَفْسٍ أَنْ تَمُوتَ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ كِتَابًا مُؤَجَّلًا وَمَنْ يُرِدْ ثَوَابَ الدُّنْيَا نُؤْتِهِ مِنْهَا وَمَنْ يُرِدْ ثَوَابَ الْآَخِرَةِ نُؤْتِهِ مِنْهَا وَسَنَجْزِي الشَّاكِرِينَ  [ And no one can die except by Allah’s command.  A time has been appointed for each.  Whoever desires the rewards of this world, We bestow  him from it; and whoever desires the reward of the Hereafter, We bestow him from that.  We shall soon reward those who are grateful. ]

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 146

وَكَأَيِّنْ مِنْ نَبِيٍّ قَاتَلَ مَعَهُ رِبِّيُّونَ كَثِيرٌ فَمَا وَهَنُوا لِمَا أَصَابَهُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَمَا ضَعُفُوا وَمَا اسْتَكَانُوا وَاللَّهُ يُحِبُّ الصَّابِرِينَ  [ There have been many a Prophets beside whom many worshipers of the Lord fought. They were neither unnerved on account of all that befell on them in the cause of Allah, nor did they weaken or showed inconsistency (against their enemies). Certainly Allah  loves those who have patience.]

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 147

وَمَا كَانَ قَوْلَهُمْ إِلَّا أَنْ قَالُوا رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَإِسْرَافَنَا فِي أَمْرِنَا وَثَبِّتْ أَقْدَامَنَا وَانْصُرْنَا عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ [ And they never said anything except that they supplicated, 'Our Lord! Forgive our sins and the excesses committed during our efforts, and keep our feet steady (in Iman) and help us prevail over disbelievers.]

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 148

فَآَتَاهُمُ اللَّهُ ثَوَابَ الدُّنْيَا وَحُسْنَ ثَوَابِ الْآَخِرَةِ وَاللَّهُ يُحِبُّ الْمُحْسِنِينَ  [ So Allah rewarded them in this world and the best of rewards are in the Hereafter.  And Allah loves those who are righteous. ]

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 149

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آَمَنُوا إِنْ تُطِيعُوا الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا يَرُدُّوكُمْ عَلَى أَعْقَابِكُمْ فَتَنْقَلِبُوا خَاسِرِينَ  [ O believers, if you listen to the infidels they will make you turn your backs, and you will be the losers. ]

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 150

But Allah is your protector, and He is the best of helpers. ]

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 151

سَنُلْقِي فِي قُلُوبِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا الرُّعْبَ بِمَا أَشْرَكُوا بِاللَّهِ مَا لَمْ يُنَزِّلْ بِهِ سُلْطَانًا وَمَأْوَاهُمُ النَّارُ وَبِئْسَ مَثْوَى الظَّالِمِينَ  [ Soon We will cast fear in the hearts of disbelievers because they have ascribed partners to Allah, for which He has not sent any proof; their destination is Hell; and what a wretched abode (the Hell is) for the unjust. ]

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 152

وَلَقَدْ صَدَقَكُمُ اللَّهُ وَعْدَهُ إِذْ تَحُسُّونَهُمْ بِإِذْنِهِ حَتَّى إِذَا فَشِلْتُمْ وَتَنَازَعْتُمْ فِي الْأَمْرِ وَعَصَيْتُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا أَرَاكُمْ مَا تُحِبُّونَ مِنْكُمْ مَنْ يُرِيدُ الدُّنْيَا وَمِنْكُمْ مَنْ يُرِيدُ الْآَخِرَةَ ثُمَّ صَرَفَكُمْ عَنْهُمْ لِيَبْتَلِيَكُمْ وَلَقَدْ عَفَا عَنْكُمْ وَاللَّهُ ذُو فَضْلٍ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ  [ Allah did indeed fulfill His promise to you when you, with His permission, were about to annihilate the enemy, until you flinched and fell to disputing about the order, and  disobeyed it after He brought you in sight (of the booty) which you covet. Among you are some that hanker after this world and some that desire the Hereafter. Then did He divert you  from your foes in order to test you. But He forgave you, For Allah is full of grace to those who believe. ]

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 153

إِذْ تُصْعِدُونَ وَلَا تَلْوُونَ عَلَى أَحَدٍ وَالرَّسُولُ يَدْعُوكُمْ فِي أُخْرَاكُمْ فَأَثَابَكُمْ غَمًّا بِغَمٍّ لِكَيْلَا تَحْزَنُوا عَلَى مَا فَاتَكُمْ وَلَا مَا أَصَابَكُمْ وَاللَّهُ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ  [ Remember, as you were rushing up  without turning back to look, though the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم ) was calling you from behind, He requited you with anguish,  for an anguish that you do not fret for missed opportunity, and what befell you,  for Allah is aware of all that you do. ]

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 154

ثُمَّ أَنْزَلَ عَلَيْكُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ الْغَمِّ أَمَنَةً نُعَاسًا يَغْشَى طَائِفَةً مِنْكُمْ وَطَائِفَةٌ قَدْ أَهَمَّتْهُمْ أَنْفُسُهُمْ يَظُنُّونَ بِاللَّهِ غَيْرَ الْحَقِّ ظَنَّ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ يَقُولُونَ هَلْ لَنَا مِنَ الْأَمْرِ مِنْ شَيْءٍ قُلْ إِنَّ الْأَمْرَ كُلَّهُ لِلَّهِ يُخْفُونَ فِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ مَا لَا يُبْدُونَ لَكَ يَقُولُونَ لَوْ كَانَ لَنَا مِنَ الْأَمْرِ شَيْءٌ مَا قُتِلْنَا هَاهُنَا قُلْ لَوْ كُنْتُمْ فِي بُيُوتِكُمْ لَبَرَزَ الَّذِينَ كُتِبَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقَتْلُ إِلَى مَضَاجِعِهِمْ وَلِيَبْتَلِيَ اللَّهُ مَا فِي صُدُورِكُمْ وَلِيُمَحِّصَ مَا فِي قُلُوبِكُمْ وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ بِذَاتِ الصُّدُورِ  [ Then after the affliction, He sent down drowsiness, which engulfed a group among you, and another party kept fearing for their own lives, thinking wrongfully of Allah, like the thoughts of ignorance; they say, 'Do we have any authority in this matter?' Say (O' Prophet ﷺ ) 'all authority lies with Allah.  They hide in their hearts what they do not reveal to you; (and) they say, had we any control, we would not have been slain here.  Say (O'Prophet ), 'even if you had been in your houses, those destined to be slain would have come forth to their places of slaying; and in order that Allah may test what is in your chests and reveal whatever is in your hearts'; and Allah knows well what lies within the hearts.]

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 155

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ تَوَلَّوْا مِنْكُمْ يَوْمَ الْتَقَى الْجَمْعَانِ إِنَّمَا اسْتَزَلَّهُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ بِبَعْضِ مَا كَسَبُوا وَلَقَدْ عَفَا اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ حَلِيمٌ  [ All those among you who turned their backs on that day (when) two armies clashed (at Uhud) were surely induced by Satan to fail in their duty because of their sinful deeds. But Allah has already forgiven them, for Allah is forgiving and kind. ]

The verses from 137 to 170 are about the battle of Uhad.  The battle of Uhad was indeed a testing and difficult time for Muslims.  They suffered heavy losses and even Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) was hit badly on the face and he lost one of his tooth. Even a rumor circulated in the battle field that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) was dead.

It was a tough time for Muslims to recover from the shock. It was because of the strategic mistake of 50 marksmen who left their assigned places as they considered that Muslims have already won the war.  Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) had commanded them not to move from their places while defending the Muslim army let whatever be the outcome of the battle.   It is reported that they were attracted to the booty of the war for which they were reprimanded by Allah () and His Apostle They were however forgiven by Allah () and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) for it and in the process Muslims learned a big lesson to remain obedient to the Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).   Allah () assured Muslims for the imminent success against the infidels and they were pacified by various examples in these verses.  We have written a brief account about the battle of Uhad in the tafseer of verse 140 earlier.

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 156

Do not be like the disbelievers who said regarding their brothers who went on a journey or on holy war, 'If they had been here with us they would not have died or been killed'. This happened so that Allah may fill their hearts with grief. Allah is the giver of life and death and sees all that you do. ]

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 157

وَلَئِنْ قُتِلْتُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أَوْ مُتُّمْ لَمَغْفِرَةٌ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَرَحْمَةٌ خَيْرٌ مِمَّا يَجْمَعُونَ  [ If you are killed in the way of Allah or you die, the forgiveness and mercy of Allah are better than all that you (could) amass (in the world). ]

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 158

And whether you are killed (in the battle field) or die (a natural death), towards Allah you will be gathered. ]

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 159

فَبِمَا رَحْمَةٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ لِنْتَ لَهُمْ وَلَوْ كُنْتَ فَظًّا غَلِيظَ الْقَلْبِ لَانْفَضُّوا مِنْ حَوْلِكَ فَاعْفُ عَنْهُمْ وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ وَشَاوِرْهُمْ فِي الْأَمْرِ فَإِذَا عَزَمْتَ فَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُتَوَكِّلِينَ  [ It was through Allah´s mercy that you (O'Prophet ﷺ) dealt with them gently; for had you been stern and hard of heart they would surely have broken away from you. So pardon them and pray that forgiveness be theirs, and seek their counsel in all affairs, And when you have come to a decision place your trust in Allah alone, for He loves those who place their trust in Him. ]

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 160

إِنْ يَنْصُرْكُمُ اللَّهُ فَلَا غَالِبَ لَكُمْ وَإِنْ يَخْذُلْكُمْ فَمَنْ ذَا الَّذِي يَنْصُرُكُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ وَعَلَى اللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ  [ If Allah is there to help you, none will overcome you; and if He forsake you, who will help you other than Him? So only in Allah should the believers place their trust. ]

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 161

وَمَا كَانَ لِنَبِيٍّ أَنْ يَغُلَّ وَمَنْ يَغْلُلْ يَأْتِ بِمَا غَلَّ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ثُمَّ تُوَفَّى كُلُّ نَفْسٍ مَا كَسَبَتْ وَهُمْ لَا يُظْلَمُونَ   [ And it is not attributable to a prophet that he should act unfaithfully; and he who acts unfaithfully shall bring that in respect of which he has acted unfaithfully on the day of resurrection; then every one will be paid in full for whatever they earned; and they will not be wronged. ]

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 162

أَفَمَنِ اتَّبَعَ رِضْوَانَ اللَّهِ كَمَنْ بَاءَ بِسَخَطٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَمَأْوَاهُ جَهَنَّمُ وَبِئْسَ الْمَصِيرُ   [ So is one who follows the will of Allah equal to one who has incurred the wrath of Allah and whose abode is surely Hell, a dreadful place? ]

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 163

There are different exalted ranks with Allah (for His prophets and Awliya), And Allah sees everything you do. ]

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 164

لَقَدْ مَنَّ اللَّهُ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِذْ بَعَثَ فِيهِمْ رَسُولًا مِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ يَتْلُو عَلَيْهِمْ آَيَاتِهِ وَيُزَكِّيهِمْ وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ وَإِنْ كَانُوا مِنْ قَبْلُ لَفِي ضَلَالٍ مُبِينٍ  [ Allah has bestowed a great favor upon Muslims, as He sent to them a Noble Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) from among them, who recites to them His verses, and purifies them, and teaches them the Book and wisdom.  Before  it, they were surely in open error.

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 165

How is it that when misfortune befell you, you said: "Where has this come from?" -- even though you had inflicted disaster twice as great on (the enemy). Say: "This has come from your own selves." Surely God has power over all things. ]

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 166

وَمَا أَصَابَكُمْ يَوْمَ الْتَقَى الْجَمْعَانِ فَبِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ وَلِيَعْلَمَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ  [ What you suffered on the day (of Uhad) the two armies had met was by Allah's dispensation, so that He may distinguish (between ) the believers.]

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 167

وَلِيَعْلَمَ الَّذِينَ نَافَقُوا وَقِيلَ لَهُمْ تَعَالَوْا قَاتِلُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أَوِ ادْفَعُوا قَالُوا لَوْ نَعْلَمُ قِتَالًا لَاتَّبَعْنَاكُمْ هُمْ لِلْكُفْرِ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَقْرَبُ مِنْهُمْ لِلْإِيمَانِ يَقُولُونَ بِأَفْواهِهِمْ مَا لَيْسَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يَكْتُمُونَ  [ And the hypocrites who were told : 'Fight in the way of Allah, or defend yourselves,' and who had replied : 'If we knew of the fight we would have followed you.' They were nearer unbelief than faith on that day, and they said with their tongues what was not in their hearts; but Allah is aware of what they hide. ]

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 168

الَّذِينَ قَالُوا لِإِخْوَانِهِمْ وَقَعَدُوا لَوْ أَطَاعُونَا مَا قُتِلُوا قُلْ فَادْرَءُوا عَنْ أَنْفُسِكُمُ الْمَوْتَ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ  [ To those who sit at home and say about their brothers : 'They would never have been killed had they listened to us, say (O Prophet ) : 'Avoid death (permanently) from your midst if what you say is true.' ]

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 169

وَلَا تَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ قُتِلُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أَمْوَاتًا بَلْ أَحْيَاءٌ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ يُرْزَقُونَ   [ And never think of those who have been killed in the cause of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision ]

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 170

فَرِحِينَ بِمَا آَتَاهُمُ اللَّهُ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ وَيَسْتَبْشِرُونَ بِالَّذِينَ لَمْ يَلْحَقُوا بِهِمْ مِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ أَلَّا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ  [ Rejoicing in what Allah has bestowed upon them of His bounty, and they receive good tidings about those [to be martyred] after them who have not yet joined them - that there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.]

Juz 4, Aal-i-Imran, Verse 171

يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ بِنِعْمَةٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَفَضْلٍ وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُضِيعُ أَجْرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ  [ Rejoicing in what Allah has bestowed upon them of His bounty, and they receive good tidings about those (to be martyred) after them who have not yet joined them,  that there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.]
