JUZ 5.3 WAL MUHSANAT  (وَالْمُحْصَنَاتُ)

سورة النساء

The Women

An Nisa | Sura # 4| 176 verses | Madinah

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

In the name of Allah, the Compassionate and the Merciful

Juz 5, An Nisa, Verse 081

وَيَقُولُونَ طَاعَةٌ فَإِذَا بَرَزُوا مِنْ عِنْدِكَ بَيَّتَ طَائِفَةٌ مِنْهُمْ غَيْرَ الَّذِي تَقُولُ وَاللَّهُ يَكْتُبُ مَا يُبَيِّتُونَ فَأَعْرِضْ عَنْهُمْ وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ وَكَفَى بِاللَّهِ وَكِيلًا  [ And they say, “We have obeyed; and when they go away from you, a group of them spend the night conspiring against what they had said; and Allah records what they conspired by night; therefore (O Prophet ﷺ) avoid them and rely upon Allah;  and Allah is Sufficient as your protector. ]

The above verse is about the hypocrites who used to show lot of obedience and respect towards the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) during the day, but some of them used to conspire against him during the night.

It is important to note that the hypocrites were of two types, one who used to conspire against the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) eagerly, the others used to look after their self interest by showing their alliance towards both Muslims and non-Muslims.

Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is comforting the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) to ignore and avoid them as Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ)  is sufficient as protector for him and the believers.

Juz 5, An Nisa, Verse 082

أَفَلَا يَتَدَبَّرُونَ الْقُرْآَنَ وَلَوْ كَانَ مِنْ عِنْدِ غَيْرِ اللَّهِ لَوَجَدُوا فِيهِ اخْتِلَافًا كَثِيرًا  [ Do they not ponder over the Quran? Had it been the word of any other but Allah they would surely have found contradictions in it. ]

Quran is the the word of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ), there is no doubt about.  It is part of the faith of Muslims to trust in Quran as the word of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ).

For Non-Muslims,  Quran is a wonder from whichever way they look at it.  It is the book which had been and is still memorized by hundreds of millions of people all over the world.  No other books equals it in this context. It is the book which has not been altered a bit during the past 1400 years.  It is the book which covers all facets of human life.  It is the greatest literary masterpiece in the world that cannot be imitated by any human or Jinn. Its style is miraculous. These and hundreds of other facts are accepted by non-Muslims and they look at it with baffled eyes.  And these facts surely compel them to accept Quran's origin to be from Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ).

Juz 5, An Nisa, Verse 083

وَإِذَا جَاءَهُمْ أَمْرٌ مِنَ الْأَمْنِ أَوِ الْخَوْفِ أَذَاعُوا بِهِ وَلَوْ رَدُّوهُ إِلَى الرَّسُولِ وَإِلَى أُولِي الْأَمْرِ مِنْهُمْ لَعَلِمَهُ الَّذِينَ يَسْتَنْبِطُونَهُ مِنْهُمْ وَلَوْلَا فَضْلُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهُ لَاتَّبَعْتُمُ الشَّيْطَانَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا [ When a matter comes to them, be it of security or fear, they spread it (among people), whereas if they returned it to the Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and to those in authority among them, then the ones who (can) draw correct conclusions from it would have known about it. And if not for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy, you would have followed Satan, except for a few. ]

This verse is a warning for all Muslims of the world not to be carried away by rumors in Muslim state.  Believing in rumors spread by vested interests played havoc during the caliphate of Hadhrat Othman (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ).   We pray Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) to save Muslims from hypocrites.

Juz 5, An Nisa, Verse 084

فَقَاتِلْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ لَا تُكَلَّفُ إِلَّا نَفْسَكَ وَحَرِّضِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَسَى اللَّهُ أَنْ يَكُفَّ بَأْسَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَاللَّهُ أَشَدُّ بَأْسًا وَأَشَدُّ تَنْكِيلًا [ So fight, (O Prophet ﷺ), in the cause of Allah; you are not responsible (for others) except for yourself. And encourage the believers (to join you) that perhaps Allah will restrain the might of those who disbelieve. And Allah is greater in might and stronger in punishment. ]

Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is commanding the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) to ignore the deliberate attempts of hypocrites to scare Muslims and keep up his fight and encourage Muslims to join him against the people who spread disorder on land.  Surely the might of the enemies does not matter in front of the might of the Almighty.

Juz 5, An Nisa, Verse 085

[Whoever intercedes for a good cause will have a reward therefrom; and whoever intercedes for an evil cause will have a burden therefrom.  And Allah has control over all the things. ]

Juz 5, An Nisa, Verse 086

وَإِذَا حُيِّيتُمْ بِتَحِيَّةٍ فَحَيُّوا بِأَحْسَنَ مِنْهَا أَوْ رُدُّوهَا إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ حَسِيبًا [ And when you are greeted with some words, greet back with words better than it or with the same; indeed Allah will take account of everything. ]

Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ) is teaching the etiquette of greetings to Muslims.  If someone is greeting you with kind words, then we are commanded to return that greeting with more kind words.

Juz 5, An Nisa, Verse 087

There is no god but He; He will surely gather you all on the Day of Resurrection in which there is no doubt.  And who is more truthful than Allah in statement. ]

Juz 5, An Nisa, Verse 088

فَمَا لَكُمْ فِي الْمُنَافِقِينَ فِئَتَيْنِ وَاللَّهُ أَرْكَسَهُمْ بِمَا كَسَبُوا أَتُرِيدُونَ أَنْ تَهْدُوا مَنْ أَضَلَّ اللَّهُ وَمَنْ يُضْلِلِ اللَّهُ فَلَنْ تَجِدَ لَهُ سَبِيلًا [ How is it that you are divided in two factions about the hypocrites? Allah has routed them for what they were doing. Do you wish to guide him to the path whom Allah has allowed to go astray? As for him whom Allah allows to go astray, you will  never find for him a way (for guidance). ]

It is important to identify the hypocrisy of the people and have a definite opinion about them.  It is dangerous to become their spokesperson in ignorance and play the card of superficial unity in the community.  It is not possible to help a person to realize the truth who has self destructed himself in the eyes of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ).

Juz 5, An Nisa, Verse 089

وَدُّوا لَوْ تَكْفُرُونَ كَمَا كَفَرُوا فَتَكُونُونَ سَوَاءً فَلَا تَتَّخِذُوا مِنْهُمْ أَوْلِيَاءَ حَتَّى يُهَاجِرُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَإِنْ تَوَلَّوْا فَخُذُوهُمْ وَاقْتُلُوهُمْ حَيْثُ وَجَدْتُمُوهُمْ وَلَا تَتَّخِذُوا مِنْهُمْ وَلِيًّا وَلَا نَصِيرًا [ They wish you to become disbelievers as they are, so that you should become like them. Therefore hold them not as friends until they go out of their homes in the way of Allah. If they do not, seize them wherever they are and do away with them. Do not make them your friends or allies. ]

The above two verses (88, 89) were revealed about 10 people who became apostates and immigrated back to Makka after they lived for sometime in Madina. There was difference of opinion among Muslims about them.  One group was of the opinion that they are apostates (Murtad), therefore, should be treated as such.  The other groups wanted to give them a chance to realize their mistake and expected that they will come back to the fold of Islam.  Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ) is describing them as apostates and since they have gone back to join Makkan pagans, they were more dangerous for Muslims.  It is important to treat them as enemies and instead of  continuing friendship with them, they should be treated as traitors and should be dealt with accordingly.

Juz 5, An Nisa, Verse 090

إِلَّا الَّذِينَ يَصِلُونَ إِلَى قَوْمٍ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَهُمْ مِيثَاقٌ أَوْ جَاءُوكُمْ حَصِرَتْ صُدُورُهُمْ أَنْ يُقَاتِلُوكُمْ أَوْ يُقَاتِلُوا قَوْمَهُمْ وَلَوْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَسَلَّطَهُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ فَلَقَاتَلُوكُمْ فَإِنِ اعْتَزَلُوكُمْ فَلَمْ يُقَاتِلُوكُمْ وَأَلْقَوْاْ إِلَيْكُمُ السَّلَمَ فَمَا جَعَلَ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ عَلَيْهِمْ سَبِيلًا [ Except those who take refuge with a people allied to you, or those who are weary of fighting you or their people, come over to you. If Allah had so willed He would surely have given them power over you, and they would have fought you. If they keep aloof and do not fight, and offer peace, Allah has left you no reason to fight them. ]

The verse describes that is important that Muslims should avoid fighting with the people who had taken refuge of Muslim allies and who are not interested to fight with you or with their own people (who are your enemies). Since they are keeping aloof, there is no reason to fight with them.

Juz 5, An Nisa, Verse 091

سَتَجِدُونَ آَخَرِينَ يُرِيدُونَ أَنْ يَأْمَنُوكُمْ وَيَأْمَنُوا قَوْمَهُمْ كُلَّ مَا رُدُّوا إِلَى الْفِتْنَةِ أُرْكِسُوا فِيهَا فَإِنْ لَمْ يَعْتَزِلُوكُمْ وَيُلْقُوا إِلَيْكُمُ السَّلَمَ وَيَكُفُّوا أَيْدِيَهُمْ فَخُذُوهُمْ وَاقْتُلُوهُمْ حَيْثُ ثَقِفْتُمُوهُمْ وَأُولَئِكُمْ جَعَلْنَا لَكُمْ عَلَيْهِمْ سُلْطَانًا مُبِينًا [ You will now find others who desire that they should be safe from you and also safe from their own people; (but) whenever their people turn them towards war, they fall headlong into it; so if they do not avoid (confronting) you nor submit an offer of peace nor restrain their hands, seize them and kill them wherever you find them; and they are the ones against whom We have given you clear authorization. ]

Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is drawing the attention of Muslims that among the people of the enemy territory (Makkan Pagans) who had taken refuge of Muslim allies, there are certain people who will join the pagans once a conflict occurs. The moment these people are identified, Muslims should fight with them (even if they remain the territory of allies) and kill them to safeguard Muslim community.

Juz 5, An Nisa, Verse 092

وَمَا كَانَ لِمُؤْمِنٍ أَنْ يَقْتُلَ مُؤْمِنًا إِلَّا خَطَأً وَمَنْ قَتَلَ مُؤْمِنًا خَطَأً فَتَحْرِيرُ رَقَبَةٍ مُؤْمِنَةٍ وَدِيَةٌ مُسَلَّمَةٌ إِلَى أَهْلِهِ إِلَّا أَنْ يَصَّدَّقُوا فَإِنْ كَانَ مِنْ قَوْمٍ عَدُوٍّ لَكُمْ وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ فَتَحْرِيرُ رَقَبَةٍ مُؤْمِنَةٍ وَإِنْ كَانَ مِنْ قَوْمٍ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَهُمْ مِيثَاقٌ فَدِيَةٌ مُسَلَّمَةٌ إِلَى أَهْلِهِ وَتَحْرِيرُ رَقَبَةٍ مُؤْمِنَةٍ فَمَنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ فَصِيَامُ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ تَوْبَةً مِنَ اللَّهِ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا [ It is not for a believer to take the life of another, except by mistake; and he who kills a believer by mistake should free a slave who is a believer, and pay blood-money to the victim´s family unless they forego it as an act of charity. If he belonged to a community hostile to you but was himself a believer, then a slave who is a believer should be freed. In case he belonged to a people with whom you have a treaty, then give blood-money to his family and free a believing slave. But he who has no means  should fast for a period of two months continuously to have his sins forgiven by Allah, and Allah is All-Knowing and All-Wise. ]

Taking revenge for something wrong done by someone,  is generally in  human nature.  Specially in a tribal setting, this is more prevalent. The tribes remain at war with each other for decades in the revenge killings. Islam changed all that. The divine command is that the retribution for a murder has to be limited to the extent of damage done.  It cannot be more.  Even in this, if the aggrieved party is willing, they can pardon the murderer by accepting an agreed money  known as Diya (blood money).

There is no retaliation in Islam; there is no mutilation of bodies in revenge, nor punishment of an entire family or population for the crimes of one member.  Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) wants us to acknowledge that revenge aggression does not produce any good; rather, it ignites the fires of hatred and bloodshed.

The above commandment is not new. Similar legislation were in force for the followers of earlier prophets.

It is in Quran -  وَكَتَبْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ فِيهَا أَنَّ النَّفْسَ بِالنَّفْسِ وَالْعَيْنَ بِالْعَيْنِ وَالْأَنفَ بِالْأَنفِ وَالْأُذُنَ بِالْأُذُنِ وَالسِّنَّ بِالسِّنِّ وَالْجُرُوحَ قِصَاصٌ ۚ فَمَن تَصَدَّقَ بِهِ فَهُوَ كَفَّارَةٌ لَّهُ ۚ وَمَن لَّمْ يَحْكُم بِمَا أَنزَلَ اللَّهُ فَأُولَـٰئِكَ هُمُ الظَّالِمُونَ  [ In the Torah We prescribed for them a life for a life, an eye for an eye, a nose for a nose, an ear for an ear, a tooth for a tooth, an equal wound for a wound: if anyone forgoes this out of charity, it will serve as atonement for his bad deeds. Those who do not judge according to what Allah has revealed are doing grave wrong. ] (Al-Maaida - 45)

Juz 5, An Nisa, Verse 093

وَمَنْ يَقْتُلْ مُؤْمِنًا مُتَعَمِّدًا فَجَزَاؤُهُ جَهَنَّمُ خَالِدًا فِيهَا وَغَضِبَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَلَعَنَهُ وَأَعَدَّ لَهُ عَذَابًا عَظِيمًا  [ Any one who kills a believer intentionally will be cast into Hell to abide therein for ever, and suffer Allah´s anger and damnation. For him a greater punishment awaits. ]

TYPES OF KILLINGS

(i) Intentional Killing - If a person kills with intention, his punishment is Qisas (equality of punishment). If one among the immediate kith and kin of the victim forgives the killer, then he has to pay blood money to others.

(ii) Circumstantial intentional killing - If  someone hits a person with a staff or iron rod and killed him. In this case, his intention will be established by the investigating authorities.  If he intended to kill him, then his punishment will be the same as above. If intentional killing could not be established, then he will be required to pay blood money to the relatives of the victim.

(iii) Killing by Mistake -  If  a person was cleaning his handgun by mistakenly pulled the trigger resulting in death of the person standing nearby, then blood money will have to be paid to relatives.

(iv) Circumstantial killing by mistake -  If a person fell down from his balcony resulting in the death of a passerby, then he will have pay blood money to his relatives.

(v) Accidental killing - If a person talking/chatting on his smartphone ignores the traffic on the busy road and is accidentally killed by a moving truck, this will be treated as an accidentally killing.  There is no blood money in accidentally killing.

Juz 5, An Nisa, Verse 094

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آَمَنُوا إِذَا ضَرَبْتُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَتَبَيَّنُوا وَلَا تَقُولُوا لِمَنْ أَلْقَى إِلَيْكُمُ السَّلَامَ لَسْتَ مُؤْمِنًا تَبْتَغُونَ عَرَضَ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا فَعِنْدَ اللَّهِ مَغَانِمُ كَثِيرَةٌ كَذَلِكَ كُنْتُمْ مِنْ قَبْلُ فَمَنَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَتَبَيَّنُوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرًا [ O' Believers, when you go  (to fight) in Allah's  cause investigate; and do not say to the one who gives you (a greeting of) peace (giving indication of he being a Muslim) 'You are not a believer'. Do you aspire for the goods of worldly life; for with Allah are many bounties. You (yourselves) were like that before; then Allah conferred His favor upon you, so investigate in whatever you do. Indeed Allah is fully aware of all that you do. ]

The verse commands Muslim army men at war in an enemy territory to be cautious in identifying people as to who is a believer and non believer there and avoid treating everyone as an unbeliever. Particularly when someone greets you with Islamic greeting, it is important to hold on for a moment instead of calling him a non-believer.  It is required to investigate before taking any action.

Juz 5, An Nisa, Verse 095

لَا يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ غَيْرُ أُولِي الضَّرَرِ وَالْمُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ بِأَمْوَالِهِمْ وَأَنْفُسِهِمْ فَضَّلَ اللَّهُ الْمُجَاهِدِينَ بِأَمْوَالِهِمْ وَأَنْفُسِهِمْ عَلَى الْقَاعِدِينَ دَرَجَةً وَكُلًّا وَعَدَ اللَّهُ الْحُسْنَى وَفَضَّلَ اللَّهُ الْمُجَاهِدِينَ عَلَى الْقَاعِدِينَ أَجْرًا عَظِيمًا [ The faithful who sit idle, other than those who are disabled, are not equal to those who fight in the way of Allah with their wealth and lives. Allah has exalted those in rank who fight for the faith with their wealth and Nufoos over those who sit idle. Though Allah´s promise of good is for all, He has granted His favor of the highest reward to those who struggle in preference to those who sit at home. ]

Juz 5, An Nisa, Verse 096

دَرَجَاتٍ مِنْهُ وَمَغْفِرَةً وَرَحْمَةً وَكَانَ اللَّهُ غَفُورًا رَحِيمًا [ For them are higher ranks with Allah, and forgiveness and grace; and and Allah is Oft Forgiving, Most Merciful. ]

Juz 5, An Nisa, Verse 097

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ تَوَفَّاهُمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ ظَالِمِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ قَالُوا فِيمَ كُنْتُمْ قَالُوا كُنَّا مُسْتَضْعَفِينَ فِي الْأَرْضِ قَالُوا أَلَمْ تَكُنْ أَرْضُ اللَّهِ وَاسِعَةً فَتُهَاجِرُوا فِيهَا فَأُولَئِكَ مَأْوَاهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ وَسَاءَتْ مَصِيرًا [ As for those whose souls are taken by the angels (at death) while in a state of unbelief, they will be asked by the angels: 'What (state) were you in?' They will answer: 'We were oppressed in the land. And the angels will say: 'Was not Allah´s earth large enough for you to migrate?' Their abode will be Hell, and what an evil abode (is Hell). ]

It is established from the above verse that if the rulers of a state are unjust and force you to proclaim and live in disbelieve, then it is required that people  migrate out of that land to live in a place where they can live by their conscience and faith. The argument that they were suppressed by tyrants and were forced to live in disbelieve, will not help in afterlife.

However, there is a respite for people who were unable to immigrate or were so weak to chart out their escape from the territory but at heart were believers.  This is described in the following verses.

Juz 5, An Nisa, Verse 098

إِلَّا الْمُسْتَضْعَفِينَ مِنَ الرِّجَالِ وَالنِّسَاءِ وَالْوِلْدَانِ لَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ حِيلَةً وَلَا يَهْتَدُونَ سَبِيلًا [ Except those who were forcibly subdued among men, and the women and children, unable to devise a plan and unaware of the way. ]

Juz 5, An Nisa, Verse 099

فَأُولَئِكَ عَسَى اللَّهُ أَنْ يَعْفُوَ عَنْهُمْ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ عَفُوًّا غَفُورًا [ May well hope for the mercy of Allah; and Allah is full of mercy and grace. ]

Juz 5, An Nisa, Verse 100

وَمَنْ يُهَاجِرْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ يَجِدْ فِي الْأَرْضِ مُرَاغَمًا كَثِيرًا وَسَعَةً وَمَنْ يَخْرُجْ مِنْ بَيْتِهِ مُهَاجِرًا إِلَى اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ ثُمَّ يُدْرِكْهُ الْمَوْتُ فَقَدْ وَقَعَ أَجْرُهُ عَلَى اللَّهِ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ غَفُورًا رَحِيمًا [ Whosoever leaves his country in Allah's cause, will find many places of refuge, and abundance on the earth. And he who leaves his home and becomes an immigrant in the way of Allah and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), and death overtakes him, is sure to receive his reward from Allah; for Allah is Oft Forgiving, Most Merciful. ]

Juz 5, An Nisa, Verse 101

وَإِذَا ضَرَبْتُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ فَلَيْسَ عَلَيْكُمْ جُنَاحٌ أَنْ تَقْصُرُوا مِنَ الصَّلَاةِ إِنْ خِفْتُمْ أَنْ يَفْتِنَكُمُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا إِنَّ الْكَافِرِينَ كَانُوا لَكُمْ عَدُوًّا مُبِينًا [ And when you travel in the land, it is no sin for you to curtail some of your obligatory prayers; if you fear that disbelievers may cause you harm; undoubtedly the disbelievers are open enemies to you. ]

Juz 5, An Nisa, Verse 102

وَإِذَا كُنْتَ فِيهِمْ فَأَقَمْتَ لَهُمُ الصَّلَاةَ فَلْتَقُمْ طَائِفَةٌ مِنْهُمْ مَعَكَ وَلْيَأْخُذُوا أَسْلِحَتَهُمْ فَإِذَا سَجَدُوا فَلْيَكُونُوا مِنْ وَرَائِكُمْ وَلْتَأْتِ طَائِفَةٌ أُخْرَى لَمْ يُصَلُّوا فَلْيُصَلُّوا مَعَكَ وَلْيَأْخُذُوا حِذْرَهُمْ وَأَسْلِحَتَهُمْ وَدَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَوْ تَغْفُلُونَ عَنْ أَسْلِحَتِكُمْ وَأَمْتِعَتِكُمْ فَيَمِيلُونَ عَلَيْكُمْ مَيْلَةً وَاحِدَةً وَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْكُمْ إِنْ كَانَ بِكُمْ أَذًى مِنْ مَطَرٍ أَوْ كُنْتُمْ مَرْضَى أَنْ تَضَعُوا أَسْلِحَتَكُمْ وَخُذُوا حِذْرَكُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ أَعَدَّ لِلْكَافِرِينَ عَذَابًا مُهِينًا [ And when you (O Prophet ﷺ) are among them and lead them in prayer, only a group of them should be with you, and they must keep their weapons with them; so when they have performed their prostrations they should move away behind you; and the other group that had not prayed, must come and offer prayers in your leadership, keeping their guard and weapons with them; the disbelievers wish that you neglect your arms and your means so they may overpower you with a single attack; it is no sin for you to lay aside your arms due to rain or if you are sick; and keep your guard; undoubtedly Allah has kept prepared a disgraceful punishment for the disbelievers. ]

Juz 5, An Nisa, Verse 103

فَإِذَا قَضَيْتُمُ الصَّلَاةَ فَاذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ قِيَامًا وَقُعُودًا وَعَلَى جُنُوبِكُمْ فَإِذَا اطْمَأْنَنْتُمْ فَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَابًا مَوْقُوتًا [ So when you have offered your prayers remember Allah while standing, sitting and reclining; and when you feel secure, offer prayers in the usual manner; and praying at fixed hours is prescribed for Muslims. ]

Islam is a perfect religion.  Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His Apostle Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) have taught us what to do at specific times during our lives.  More or less all possible scenarios have been covered. During travels, the prayers can be curtailed.  In times of security threat, a group has to stay armed and alert while the other prays.  In normal times,  prayers should be established as it is required by Sharia.  During relaxation, you can do Zikr.   What is invocation (Zikr - ذکر)?  To remember, and not to forget.  The remembrance can be oral or in heart.  It can be done by holding your breath or without.  The objective of invocation is mindfulness of Allah.  This can be done while walking, standing, sitting or reclining.

Juz 5, An Nisa, Verse 104

وَلَا تَهِنُوا فِي ابْتِغَاءِ الْقَوْمِ إِنْ تَكُونُوا تَأْلَمُونَ فَإِنَّهُمْ يَأْلَمُونَ كَمَا تَأْلَمُونَ وَتَرْجُونَ مِنَ اللَّهِ مَا لَا يَرْجُونَ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا [ Do not relax in pursuit of the disbelievers.  If you suffer, they shall also suffer like you.  But while you have hope (of success) from Allah, they have none. Surely Allah is All Knowing, All Wise.]

Juz 5, An Nisa, Verse 105

إِنَّا أَنْزَلْنَا إِلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ بِالْحَقِّ لِتَحْكُمَ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ بِمَا أَرَاكَ اللَّهُ وَلَا تَكُنْ لِلْخَائِنِينَ خَصِيمًا [ We have indeed sent down the true Book towards you (O  Prophet  ﷺ ) so that you may judge between men, in the way Allah may show you; and avoid (repeated) pleading (for forgiveness of) the treacherous.]

Juz 5, An Nisa, Verse 106

وَاسْتَغْفِرِ اللَّهَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ غَفُورًا رَحِيمًا [ And seek forgiveness from Allah (for the believers); indeed Allah is Oft Forgiving, Most Merciful.]
