تفسيرِ اَسدي

بِسم الله الرحمنِ الرحيم

الحمد لله رب العالمين ، والصلاة والسلام على سيدنا محمد وعلى آله وصحبه أجمعين

The Quran is the word of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) addressed to the mankind via Apostle Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم)Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) has invited  all human beings and Jinns to accept the guidance and submit to Him and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم)The Quran is relevant for all times and places as it was relevant at the time, place and the circumstances in which it was revealed over a period of 23 years.

The Quran testifies that Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) is the Apostle and guide of entire humankind and his advent is for the mercy upon all worlds in the Cosmos.

It is in Quran –  وَأَرْسَلْنَاكَ لِلنَّاسِ رَسُولًا ۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِاللَّهِ شَهِيدًا [ And We have sent you (O’ Mohammad ﷺ) as an Apostle for the entire mankind, and Allah is  Sufficient as a Witness.] (An-Nisa – 79).

It is in Quran –  وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ إِلَّا رَحْمَةً لِّلْعَالَمِينَ [ (O’ Prophet ﷺ) ‘We have not sent you except for the Mercy upon all worlds (in the cosmos).]  (Al-Anbiya – 107).

The style of Quran is miraculous.  It is a wonder from whichever way you look at it.  It is the book which has been memorized by hundreds of millions of people all over the world for the past 1400 years.  No other books equals it in this context. It is the book which has not been altered a bit ever since it was revealed. It is the book of guidance which covers all facets of human life.  It is the greatest literary masterpiece in the world that cannot be imitated by any human or Jinn. It is not a book of history, even though some historical events of the Prophets and their nations have been described in it in a unique way for people to learn and take heed to Allah's (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) commandments. These,  and hundreds of other facts are accepted even by non-Muslims and they look at the Quran with baffled eyes and are completely overwhelmed and intrigued by its majestic power.  And these undeniable facts compel them to accept Quran's origin to be the word of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ).

Quran has been translated into almost every known language in the world. There are many English translations available in print and online.  However, the need for a comprehensive and authentic modern English Tafseer of Quran in English, based on the Sahih Iman requirements of Muslims has been felt for a long time and Tafseer-e-Asedi will In-Sha-Allah (إِنْ شَاءَ ٱللَّهُ‏) fulfill this requirement.

The basic features of Tafseer-e-Asadi are briefly described below.

(i) The English language used is very simple and understandable  even by the first time readers.

(ii) As the Quran possesses an external appearance and a hidden depth, an exoteric (direct) as well as an esoteric (indirect) meaning, the issues in  Tafseer-e-Asedi  are explained in such a way that the esoteric meanings are understood by the reader;  at the same time it does not contradict with the exoteric sense.

(iii) Before I started writing the Tafseer, I read over 50-60 English translations, and some Urdu translations and a few Tafaseer and realized that  some translations are better in their linguistic quality, while others have tried to be exact with the literal meanings. Whatever may be the case, they could not maintain the accuracy in portraying the true meaning all through.  In addition, many inaccurate, and sometimes misleading translations are also available.  Many Quranic translations and some Tafaseer are done by the scholars of different sects who have  tried to interpret the meanings of the Quranic verses as per the beliefs of their sects. Thus, a comprehensive Tafseer in English highlighting Sahih Iman requirements was essential for people to come back to the correct Islamic faith.

(iv) The most important aspect of Tafseer-e-Asedi is the identification of the requirement of Sahih Iman.  The Muslim Umma is disintegrated into innumerable sects and their subgroups. Many new sects are emerging by the day  and everyone claims they are on the right path of Islam. It is about time that Muslim Ummah gets rid of all these sects and come back to Sahih Iman because Sahih Iman is the basic and essential requirement for salvation in Hereafter. If you do not realize this fact, Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) do not have any need for you.  You will be on you own on the Day of Judgment and will not find any helper there.

Tafseer-e-Asedi identifies the deviations in beliefs and leaves no room for doubt in the mind of the people about Sahih Iman.  And it will In-Sha-Allah (إِنْ شَاءَ ٱللَّهُ‏) create courage in people to eradicate evil ways and implement Islamic morals in their lives.

(v)  At times, a verse of Quran looks ambiguous but the same issue is explained in detail at another place in the Quran. Similarly, a few Quranic verses appearing at different places need to be read together, complementing each other, in order to understand an issue fully. Sometimes, a Quranic verse has to be understood in the light of authentic Ahadith.  Some times the explanations  from the Prophet's (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) Ahadith or sayings of the companions need to be read to understand a verse. Sometimes, a taweel is necessary to reach to the correct meanings.  But the taweel (interpretation) essentially depends upon other Quranic verses and Ahadith in the related issues.  All these and many other required issues have been kept in mind while writing Tafseer-e-Asedi.

(vi) It is important to note that Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) have taught us by various ways that cover every aspect of our lives.

It is in Quran – وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ الْهَوَىٰ - إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْيٌ يُوحَىٰ [ (Prophet Mohammad ﷺ) does not say anything with his self desire, except that this is the revelation which is coming to him (from Allah).]  (An-Najm – 3-4).

It is in Quran -  لَّقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ [ Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) is an exemplary model (for all of you).] (Al-Ahzab – 21).

In plenty of translations of Quran and also in Tafaseer, it is observed that the writers wrongly relate human weaknesses with the person of a prophet or his close associates based on certain incidents in their lives.  Sometimes they do not understand the meaning of a certain verse. They should know that an incident or a statement used for a Prophet carries different meaning than when it is used for a common man.   If you do not understand these sensitive issues, you may go astray.

Understanding Quran is not an easy task. Only with the mercy of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His Apostle Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), one can comprehend the meanings of the Quranic verses in their proper perspective. I am thankful to Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His Apostle Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) for allowing me, guiding me and encouraging me for this task.

When I look back, I realize that the writing of this Tafseer would not have been possible without the assistance of Shaikh Hadhrat Mir Habeebullah Shah Quadri, my son, who remained so active throughout this work and helped me improve the explanations, usage of English language and certain textual errors.

I am also thankful to my wife who relieved me from all homely responsibilities and allowed me to focus on this task.  She is perhaps the first woman who read the entire Tafseer while it was being written.

I am also thankful to my son Shaikh Mir Rahmatullah Shah Quadri for his financial assistance and unmatched care he has for his parents.

I am also thankful to my elder daughter who is a source of encouragement and is very helpful in improving the text and in eliminating the typographical errors.

I am also thankful to my other two daughters who have equally participated in reading the text and in eliminating the typographical  errors.

In spite of all my efforts, I am a human being and I do not know  where I have fallen short of expectations.  I seek forgiveness of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) for any shortcoming in the text.

 Shaikh Mir Asedullah Shah Quadri
